ICE Trickle Charging
Trickle Charging
Hi all...
A couple of items....
First....I was curious how the Cruise Control would work with the addition of the Roar Pedal electronic throttle controller in place.
Finally had a day of good weather here in Colorado, so I took the Mini out for a spin on the highway heading towards Boulder.
Wind was gusty and this stretch of road is somewhat 'hilly'. Set the cruise control to 68 and off we went.
Perfect... absolutely no feel of tranny shifting or straining to climb hills, or when heading into the wind.
Not sure the Roar Pedal made any difference, but the Distance cruise control is a pleasure when cruising at speed.
Distance Cruise Control keeps a specified distance between you and the car in front of you.
This distance can be set in the OS, or it can be automatically adjusted, also by the OS, as 'Situational Distance Control'.
It accelerates or brakes as necessary, and works extremely well.
My Mini also has the Assisted Driving Mode, which helps keep the car in the lane. I don't use this mode.
Secondly....
I am considering using a trickle charger, as I don't drive my Mini often, and the temperature in the garage falls to the teens and twenties overnight in our cold winter weather.
I've noticed that after several days of sitting in the cold garage, the digital display OS is a bit 'glitchy' and takes some time to operate correctly. Maybe battery discharge in the cold weather?
If I go this route, the hood (bonnet for my friends across the 'big pond') will be open while the trickle charger is connected.
Generally, I have the alarm set, even in the garage, so the car is not in 'pre-condition' mode, which will drain the battery quicker.
I checked with the dealer, and they said no problem using a trickle charger, and no need to set the alarm to stay out of pre-conditioning mode.
One other thing...
While I had them on the line, I asked about correct oil weight in different climates. He said 0-20 full synthetic is recommended, no matter where you live.
Enjoy those Minis!

I use a trickle charger, just get one of those smart ones (auto volt detector) and use a ground faulted receptacle. Should be fine. No need to set alarm.

Thanks, ECS....
I already have a good trickle charger which I used previously on a couple of Lotus Elises and an Alfa 4C in the winter.
What are your thoughts concerning 'correct' oil for our 4th gen Minis?
I assume you have some oil change kits and the oil meets the recommended BMW/Mini standards for our cars?

Hello,
Great!

Should be a sticker on your car? 0w20 and 0w30 are the newer specs for the oil. 0w20 17FE+ is the stock spec for F66 Cooper If you keep it oem just go with that. Also the filter MINI went back to the 2014-2019 design F56 filter is now the 2025+ MINIs design. So make sure you select the correct filter.

Then you have to reset the oil count down.
Should be similar to the F56 to do the change. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...rocedures.html
