Tent Camping suggestions

Can some one suggest a good campsite for tent camping?

What about food nearby? or should we plan on cooking on a camp stove?

MrsDiff and I are starting to make plans.

If you are talking about the Dragon there are dozens of them. How close do you want to be?

Your best bet is the Fontana Resort Campground. They have tent and camper sites and a bathouse. Other than Fontana resort, there aren't really any nearby eateries closer than Robbinsville.

I would recommend bring most of your own food and a camp stove. Our gang usually stays in a cabin and be grill / cook most of our meals. There are no fast food places around. Fontana has a nice little country store with the basics but I strongly recommend bring most of your goodies you like to snack on over the weekend. Especially your Beer! There is only one place to buy beer / wine and its over 10 miles from Fontana. The area has several beautiful campgrounds! Enjoy, Morgan

I too am considering tent camping. Just depends on how hot/cold it is at that time in the mountains.

The nearest WalMart is about an hour-plus away. The Ingles market in Robbinsville is a great supermarket. I go to the Dragon so often that I got one of their club cards!

You can buy stuff at the general store at Fontana Village, but it's only for emergencies...too pricey! I agree that the campsites at Fontana are the way to go. Very nice facilities. Check out this link:

http://www.fontanavillage.com/fontan...tml#CAMPGROUND

The sites are $15/20 per night ($20 for full hook-up).

When are you going to camp...in May or sooner?

Fontana Village now sells beer at the general store and at the Texaco Gas Station. The restaurant, the Peppercorn, has a full bar now! I was there in July and was quite pleased at this new development.

I don't remember if Fontana sells wine, but the little package store at Tapoco Lodge does.

Yes MrsDiff and I are considering camping there. We are talking 4th Annual MINIs on the Dragon May 2006. MIB should be 6 months old by then and past the break in period!

If you don't mind a bit of a hike to get to the dragon, I like the "lost mine " campground on 74 close by the Nantahalla outdoor store. It is probably about 20 from the dragon but the camp sites are in tall pines on a brook and it is wonderful. The NOC restaurant is just down the hill. call Ann or John 828 488 6445

When I go Mountain biking at the Tsali Recreaction Area (not to far from the Dragon at all really) I always stay at a campground called Turkey Creek. Nice little place that is super quiet that time of the year.

I've spent many years riding a motorcycle through Deals Gap and the area. Usually 3-4 times a year. We stay at the KOA in Tellico Plains which is on the west side of the Cherahola Skyway. The Cherahola Skyway is a much better road with less traffic than the dragon. The Skyway will dump you into 129 on the east side. A circle route taking the Cherahola to 129 then to 74 and back to Tellico Plains is about 80 miles. The area around the dragon is a dry county and there very few dining choices. Tellico Plains has a half dozen dining places, gas, grocery and adult beverages. That's where we'll be staying. See you there.
