Hello everyone, this is the first repair for me on my 2017 Countryman S, 105k miles.
It began with what I think was unrelated hard shifts (it’s automatic). This would happen as it shifted up and down, heavy clunky shifting but no grinding noises and no dash lights.
Next day I got the yellow high engine temp warning, then red engine high temp warning. I immediately pull over and the coolant reservoir is empty, so I add about 3 liters before it’s back to normal levels. She starts fine, and drives home 5 miles with no lights. When I check the coolant it is empty again with a mixture of oil coating the inside of the coolant tank. Car never leaked anything to the ground. So I figure the internal passages of the oil filter housing are degraded and it’s time to replace (105k miles). It’s a common repair and I bought the metal replacement with all oem seals and gaskets. When I’m removing the old filter housing today it actually looks fine. I don’t see and broken plastic or seals out of place. There is some white contamination though. I’ll replace this part anyway, but could it be this still or likely another failure, like a head gasket? Car had been fine the past 10k miles I have owned it.
3 liters?! That’s almost full cooling system capacity. I would drain the oil pan to see if there are signs of coolant in there.
I just finished replacing the oil filter housing and will drain and flush oil and coolant tomorrow and report back. Not sure how to flush the coolant yet…
Oil drained from the car looked clean, trans fluid looks disgusting (automatic). Definitely coolant is in my trans.
1. Is this likely a trans cooler failure?
2. Will several drain and flushes clean the trans?

Oooof. The transmission cooler would be my guess. I would think you'd need to perform numerous drain and fills to clean up the transmission. Hopefully, nothing got damaged internally.

Thank you for your help!
I’m ordering a new trans cooler. Then I’ll drain and flush several times with valvoline atf then one last drain and fill with the expensive aisin fluid.
