Help With Oil Filter Housing DIY

Going to change out the electric fan and consequently draining coolant to remove the radiator hoses.
With this in mind I was going to change out the oil filter housing seal. I understand that removing the housing will cause coolant to drain out?
Any advice is appreciated.

'oil filter housing seal'??
Not familiar with that being a maintenance item.
Do you mean the oil cooler (which cools the oil via the water coolant)?

It's not a typical maintenance item but one that seems to fail frequently.
No, it's the seal that goes between the oil filter housing and the block.
Hoping someone chimes in.
I know there are quite a few folks that have done this.

I just completed this job as a part of some major modifications and maintenance I'm doing that pulled the front end of my R53 down to the short block and trans unit.

The oil filter housing and oil coolant seals you are mentioning are connected to one another but are two separate seals (actually three...one for the oil filter housing and two for the oil cooler connection). There is no need to replace with the service you are doing unless you are experiencing a leak of oil and/or coolant around the oil filter area. The seals are not typical maintenance replacement items although as others have said the seals do occasionally go bad and in my case I did replace them since I was right there with everything surrounding the housing removed.

Yes, you will lose coolant and also oil in the process of changing the three seals, so you'll also want to do an oil change while replacing the seals.

For me it was reasonably easy to get to the oil filter housing because I had the exhaust manifold and related heat shields removed...it is a very tight area otherwise. All three seals are special, but cheap and easy to obtain from your favorite Mini parts provider (I use Way Motor Works).

Folks, sorry, I should have mentioned that the oil filter housing seal on my car is leaking. I'm not just doing it as a regular "service".
But thanks for the advice about the "other" seals. I have the main one for the housing but not the other two for (I'm assuming) the other two hoses.
