Went down the You Tube rabbit hole this morning on Countrymen and concluded a Gen 3 is what we want and preferably a 2019 or newer. Never got a reply to a message sent to the dealer on the blue one near KC and his web site now lists one lone Subaru for sale. The FB marketplace ad is unavailable but the Craig's List ad is still up, but I am assuming the 2019 was sold. the search goes on, though. Thanks to All for your comments and knowledge.

Let us know what you get. I would do a 22+ JCW if you can.

I would look for a JCW too if it was to be my car, but wifey wants an automatic and doesn't need the extra power.

This one looked interesting, but as a manual shift she declined.

I would confirm it is manual…don’t see interior pics…as dealerships often get the listing incorrect. 2019 was last year for manual as I understand. I wouldn’t shy away from JCW, not a huge power bump and available in auto. Keep looking…there is a good one out there!
Looked up the vin, says it has hill assist so assume is manual transmission?

Sent a message asking if it is manual shift.
Ran the vin on realOEM.com and the build month was 12/2018 and it is an ALL4 even though it doesn't have the badges.

You can enter the VIN here and get a nice report for the car:
https://oemnavigations.com/pages/vin...n&_ss=e&_v=1.0

They might have a lookup limit per day, but when I was looking, I ran the VINs for cars I thought I’d be interested in.

Today I took my wife to see a 2017 Cooper Countryman ALL 4 locally expecting to be totally under-whelmed (and the acceleration was a bit underwhelming) but otherwise I was impressed. It had a crack in the windshield but it was otherwise very clean for a Mini with 152,162 miles. It has heads up display, parking assist, GPS, and a steering wheel with a John Cooper Works badge. I asked if the steering wheel had been changed and Cesar said it is a special edition.

When I did a search on the VIN asking if it was a special edition, AI said

"The VIN WMZYV5C30H3E02699 corresponds to a standard production model, specifically a 2017 MINI Countryman Cooper ALL4, not a special edition. The VIN breakdown indicates the standard model specifications:
WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier): WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) starting with "WMZ" indicates it's a MINI manufactured under the BMW group.
Model: The relevant digits in the Vehicle Descriptor Section identify it as a Countryman Cooper ALL4 model, a standard trim level offered for that model year.
Model Year: The 10th character, 'H', confirms the model year is 2017.

While MINI has released various special editions over the years (such as the Oxford, Boardwalk, or Untamed Editions), this specific VIN does not denote any of those limited versions. It is a standard production vehicle. You can use the NHTSA VIN decoder for further official information on the vehicle's manufacturing details."

Even with the I3 engine it seemed adequate if not impressive, and the electric seats had plenty of adjustments. My wife was less impressed (she wants shiny wheels and wanted to ride in and drive more examples) so I drove her to another local dealer that had advertised a 2018 SE but that dealer said he had just sold it 35 minutes earlier. Most of the ones that Carfax keeps emailing me about seem to be in Kansas City.

So...what could I expect in a newer model that this 2017 does not have, besides fewer miles and an S engine? Was there ever a JCW edition of a Non-S Countryman? And if so, what would be the difference other than a badge on the steering wheel? I am somewhat torn because the $8,500 asking price is considerably less than what most of the 2019 models that I was looking for are asking, (and one under 10 grand is 3.5 % sales tax VS 6.5% sales tax in Arkansas). Should I even consider this one?

That car has all the bells, whistles, and glitter! Has lol the miles too. When new, that car would have cost more than just getting a slightly lower spec S model. It presents well in the pictures… It wasn’t uncommon for Mini to offer JCW trim pieces on other models beside JCW, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the steering wheel and door sills show up on the build sheet.

Thank you, njaremka, for that ViN decoding site. It was really helpful, and you are right that this Countryman was ordered with a lot of farkles, including a 02XC JCW leather steering wheel and 07KM JCW interior package. Others to catch my eye are 0544 Cruise control with brake function and 02VB Tyre pressure display (which I've found very useful on our 2010 Honda Odyssey Touring - the car she wants to replace)

Now I am even more interested in spite of the i3 engine. Got to do some more research before Monday, but already it looks like it would be another $1,500 or more if the wifey has to have shiny wheels, even for used ones.

That is interesting. I checked the photos of another 2019 automatic I had considered and it had a P for parked too. Here are two responses I received:

Hi Phil,
It's Katie from Kansas City Hyundai.
Thank you for expressing your interest.
Let me take a look at the specification of this vehicle model, and a member of our team will contact you with all the information.
This 2019 Mini Countryman has Automatic transmission.
If you'd like to schedule an appointment, simply choose a day and time, and I'll arrange it for you. Alternatively, would you like us to call your number, 479-270-5432, before you schedule an appointment?

Phil,
I saw your chat with Katie, our AI assistant. I can confirm it is a manual transmission, yes. Are you available to come by today or tomorrow?
Kind Regards,
T.J. MacAdam
Internet Manager

So....Is A I "Katie" smarter than a human manager? Or does a manual also show a P if you set the parking brake?

White one at K C Hyundai is auto…has two pedals. Non Mini/BMW dealers seem to be about 50% on correctly identifying trans.

I took another look but did not see an interior photo. Maybe there are more on another site?
In any case for the wife the checkered flag decals would probably be a deal breaker.

“Clearly” this is an automatic. Salesman was probably just reading off the listing instead of actually looking at the car. Morons.

Those side decals can be removed….

OK, I saw it in the photos at that link, and Yes probably too lazy to actually go look. Hmmm. Manual seats and not as many farkles as the 2017 I actually drove with both seats powered and the heads up display. Trying to get the Carfax video he sent to my wife's phone onto my laptop where I can read it to see if the timing chain was ever changed in 152K miles.

2019 with everything?

I want to thank everyone for your advice and information on my Countryman search; It was very helpful. When I went to test drive the 2017 on a Saturday I did not know that much about Countrymen and I didn’t expect it to be a candidate because of its i3 engine, but it would be a chance for my wife to get a feel for the size and driving experience to see if she liked it. I was impressed with all the gadgets and found the i3 adequate, but by Sunday my wife decided she had to have a blue and white one with shiny wheels if it was to be her car. Then when I discovered that it had nearly all the options available in 2017 except for bonnet stripes and bigger wheels (Thanks njaremka for that BMW VIN decoding site) and I was tempted to buy it for myself and called Monday to ask if they could email me the Carfax so I could see what service it had. They sent a video of the Carfax to my wife’s phone, but it was too small to read and when I called again Tuesday to ask if I could get a printed copy, it was sold. It had been on Marketplace for 14 weeks when I drove it, and darn if someone didn’t buy it just a few days afterward. I was bummed. That one set a pretty high bar and I figured we’d still be a two Odyssey family for the near future until another “Unicorn” used Countryman happened too show up with all those options.

Well, a 2019 Cooper S Countryman did turn up this week with all the same options plus bonnet stripes and 19” wheels, but it is 4-1/2 hours away in Hot Springs and at twice the price of the 2017. It’s here on Marketplace. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...type=top_picks

KBB says the Private Party value for WMZYT5C56K3G91523 with 89,350 miles is $11,110 to $15,010 and he is asking $17,000, but it is a one owner with all the bells and whistles, two key fobs, spare, lifting jack, and decent looking standard tires. It ticks all the boxes for options and wifey requirements (bless her heart) so I am again tempted, but still bummed I missed the 2017. What do you guys think?

That thing is FULLY loaded! It is a nice car, and these generations seem to be much more reliable compared to the previous generation. You are going to spend more for a Countryman S (189hp 2.0 4-cylinder) vs a comparable Countryman. (134hp 1.5 3-cylinder) Also, not sure if the 2017 was All4 all-wheel-drive, either. You'll pay more for the All4 version.

Really, comes down to features, cost, performance. What do you want?

The 2017 was an ALL4 and it had the 07KM JCW interior package which included the JCW steering wheel, JCW sill plates, stainless pedals and foot rest, and JCW floor mats. The 2019 has the 02XC-JCW steering wheel and 0481-Sports Seats so not every option the 2017 had but most of them. And it is an S with the i4 engine and 8 speed auto. The 2019 seller said a dealer had contacted him about the listing and wanted to give him a good trade-in on a new truck, but he doesn't really need a new truck. Well, I don't really NEED a newer Mini either, but as a friend once put it, "It's not a matter of need."

Still corresponding with the fellow in Hot Springs with the 2019 Cooper S countryman ALL4 with 90K miles and lots of options and he is still at $16,500.

Have also run across a 2019 Countryman JCW at a car lot just down the road listed for $15K with 140K miles and have looked at but not yet driven it because of the snow and cold weather here. If it was Blue and white It could be "the one", but it is blue and red which the wife thinks looks like a "Clown Car".
It is going to be warmer tomorrow so I may go take a test drive and see if she still thinks "Clown Car" in person.
It is at https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...0-7942cd3c3783 It has a number of nice options but no heads-up display or phone charger in the arm rest.

Hmmm….I’m not keen on that colour combo either…but an option could be to wrap the roof in black (or white?) and remove or switch out the stripes? I think it would look awesome with black roof and darken the window tint. In my opinion a darker upper makes the car look better…but just my thoughts…white would be nice also…
If it drives well I think you will be happy with JCW All4. I really enjoy my 2018 JCW. I don’t miss the display, but really wish I had memory seats…

I drove the blue and red Countryman ALL4 JCW today and liked it. I asked if the price was firm, and Max the salesman said if I pay cash he will take $13,000. That's tempting, but I still have the color hurdle with my wife who is adamant that she doesn't want to drive a "clown car". Blue and white is just right, but blue and red makes the deal dead....for her at least. It has 140K miles and some curb rash on the wheels, but is otherwise pretty clean. One thing I noticed is that it did not feel like it shut off at stop lights, but did feel like something sort of "let go" as you started to move. Maybe it sets the E brake at a stop? And releases as you press the accelerator? I did not turn the stop and go off at the toggle switch. It did accelerate much nicer than the 2017 i3 I drove. Not quite like my 04 Cooper S JCW with 950 fewer pounds and 25 more hp under the bonnet, but nicer than the i3 So....I wonder if I could have the roof wrapped in white and the mirror caps changed to white? Not sure if the bonnet and side strips can be changed easily.
