F60 PHEV Drivetrain Malfunction
PHEV Drivetrain Malfunction
My 2019 Countryman All4 SE has been having a drivetrain error pop up, and it goes into limp mode.
I had it at the dealer service once already and they said they couldn’t pull any fault codes.
It is back in the service center again, about 6 months later, and same thing; no fault code. It has probably popped up at least once a month. They tried telling my husband they can tell he has used mid-grade fuel 5 times recently, and that that could be causing it. I have never heard of such a thing, the car logs what kind of fuel is used?! But doesn’t log the fault codes?
Has anyone else run into anything similar? Currently have a loaner while they are trying to figure it out.

Need to use 91 or higher.
Most of the time with the drivetrain fault its related to the auto shifter but its a problem in the 2014-2019 auto transmission in the F56 F57 F54 F55
And that fault would be stored. If it has a fault they should see it. Even our schwaben scan tool would see it.

Shockingly, we have a loaner countryman, and the MPG on the hwy are better than my PHEV!
It is not really a surprise that the Hybrid gets worse MPG at the highway speeds. It has a heavier battery and electronics on top of the smaller motor and being in electric mode is more rare at higher speeds. It is designed to excel at the shorter distances, speeds, and commutes via all the electric assist.
That's great IF they found the error, but be wary because many of these dealerships don't have a trained hybrid technician and even know how to work on these vehicles and troubleshoot properly... Ask them for what code or other evidence pointed to the HPFP being the root cause.

Now I’m curious, and I may start another thread: is there a way to find out if a shop has a trained hybrid tech? I asked them about testing the battery since we are getting close to the 80k warranty, and he gave me some line about the battery not being meant for all electric driving, and that if it is driven on that a lot, it will wear out quick, and that just seems like an absurd response to me. He knew nothing about whether there being a certain level of degradation at which they would replace it, and they seem confounded by the entire hybrid thing.
So, I probably need to find a MINI service center with a certified hybrid tech in the next 10k miles.
Sounds like you're on the right track and seeing how little dealerships know let alone specialized hybrid... As you did, ask the question if they have a tech trained on the hybrid platform. Generally, if the battery capacity drops to 70% or less from when new, it is considered warranty.
