Engine Malfunction Fault : Help Decoding Codes
Engine Malfunction Fault : Help Decoding Codes
...pulled from the top-level R56 sub-forum and reposted here.
All, I recently experienced the dreaded "Engine Malfunction" error that forces the car to run in a degraded performance mode [eg, no turbo]. I received the code twice in the past three days [cleared itself in between]. Both times were under hard acceleration. This leads me to believe core functions such as fuel/spark/air [as opposed to sensors].
I pulled the car in the garage and went through the magic nonsense to pull both the OBD codes and the "special" codes from Menu 14. Sadly, there are _no_ OBD codes. I even verified with a code reader from an auto shop. No OBD codes. However, there are four error codes from Menu 14.
They are as follows:
931B h
A559 h
931F
9314
Any thoughts on how to decode such things?
My plan is to pull the plugs the morning and see if they're dirty or fouled. I only use 93 octane fuel from Shell, so I don't believe this is a fuel quality issue. I need to replace the air filter, which I'll also do tomorrow, but I can't see an air filter causing such havoc. Might be the high or low pressure fuel pumps. I hope its not the carbon build-up issues found on many R56's.
In the mean time, I replaced the plugs and air filter. No dice... the issues persists. I added some fuel system cleaner and drove for a bit. No change. I tried reading the OBD codes again. No codes. Any thoughts??

Quick update. I called both Dallas-area Mini dealerships and tried to get some help on the codes. I understand that this violates much of their business model, but given the unusually large plate of issues for the R56's, I was hoping for some sympathy. As usual, Mini of Plano [Sewell] was completely useless. I'll never take a vehicle to a Sewell dealership again after the mess they made of my R56 18 months ago. Mini of Dallas was a bit more helpful. I actually spoke with the service manager and the shop foreman. Neither had seem these codes issued on recent customer cars. They did some basic looking through their documentation and came up with nothing.
I took the car out for a spin and noticed that the fuel mark was dropping relatively quickly. A full bar of fuel on light driving through ~18 miles. This might point toward the high pressure fuel unit that w/ its associated fuel level float+sensor.
It appears as if I'll be forced to take it to a dealership. Mini of Dallas it is...

I also have a strange issue with the fuel bar on my fuel level indicator, after every time I fill it up usually 50 to 100 miles is drops to half a tank, then slowly rises back to full. Is this a HPFP issue or tank level indicator?
A quick update on my ongoing issues. I watched the car for a number of days and the light would eventually go off under very light driving conditions. However, it would come back on under modest acceleration beyond ~3K RPM. I went searching for vacuum leaks and couldn't find anything terribly suspect [but vacuum leaks on Mini's are not my expertise].
I ended up taking the car into Mini of Dallas. They immediately found that the air pump was leaking a bit of oil and failed to hold appropriate pressure [hence the vacuum leak]. One of the down tubes was also slightly cracked. However, the major issues came from the turbo. Apparently, the turbo impeller bearings were going bad enough to bound a fin off the housing... which caused the original fault. The car noticed the dragging impeller and opened the waste gate as the precaution [which triggered the error in the EMS].
So... now I'm getting a new turbo, new air pump and new vacuum lines + connections [including the down tube].
I love driving this car, but man this is painful. ~72K and I've replaced several major components!!!

I am getting the same issue with a 1/2 lit CEL and reduced power (limp mode) intermittently when I drive the car aggressively, and definitely recently when in sport mode or with the AC on and the rpms exceed 3k. Initially I thought it was low coolant which seemed to fix the light initially but now it’s definitely related to acceleration. This post has been helpful though I just bought my 09 Clubman JCW 3 months ago.... last thing I need is a busted turbo :( after accessing the hidden menu it is giving error 9314h. I have an appointment for this Friday at 7:30 with my local mini dealer. Will keep you all posted on the frustration going forward.
