R60 brake service indicator issue

Last month I replaced the rear pads and did the wire jumper in the sensor plug to reset the mileage indicator, which set the mileage to 36k. The other day I noticed the indicator was showing 700 mi remaining. I’ve never had this issue with any of my other MINIs. I reset it again and am keeping an eye on it. Anyone ever have this issue? The front indicator has been showing correct mileage.

there are two ways MINI monitors brake wear. One is the physical sensor and the other is a miles counter like the oil tracker. The physical sensor reset when you closed the circuit. And you reset the other ...... I think you'll be good .....

Yes, Capt. I know that. What I’m trying to understand is how the mileage counter could go from 36k last month to 700. There were only about 400 mi put on the car in a month.

Did your “jumper” fall out? If the pad sensor is tripped, the car might think the pads are worn down enough to trigger the reminder…

So just to clarify my situation. Upon completion of changing the pads, I disconnected the sensor and placed the wire jumper into the plug to reset the reminder back to 36k. I then reconnected the sensor and we were good to go. Thursday, I reset the system after it had indicated there were only 700 miles remaining. Today, only 3 days after it had been reset to 36k, the indicator read 2200. I'm going to double check the sensor but I'm almost positive that pad kit I got from MINI included a sensor.

If I am reading your procedure correctly, you replaced the worn sensor after resetting the service counter? If that's the case, that's your problem. Those sensors are not reusable. The system would see the old worn sensor and assume the pads are worn. The way the sensor works is when the pads wear down, the sensor wears, too. As the sensor wears, it eventually breaks the connection, and the system starts the minimum counter, which in your case seems to be the 700 miles.

If your intention is to tie the sensor out of the way, you still need to use a new sensor.
