Greetings all. My family and I were recently stationed in Germany. We needed a car and picked up 2012 Mini Countryman S ALL4 with about 71k. The day I brought it home, a 4 hour trip, it had a sweet smell and I thought I saw steam coming out of the bonnent at points of traffic along the way.

Long story short I checked the coolant tank and it was pretty shy of min. I drove to base and back today looking for coolant but they didn't have the right kind. The next picture shows the tank almost bone dry.

I checked the dipstick and it appears relatively normal but I'm new to Mini's so any help us appreciated.

Matt

Check the thermostat housing, I bet you have a leak coming down on top of the transmission housing. It hangs out up there till it spills over on the ground.

Yep, the dealer replaced the thermostat and a hose. The gasket inside was breaking down. That was two days ago. I just went out to check the car as it's been sitting for a few hours now in 40 degree temperature and the coolant is still below the MIN line though.

Ok,

1. thermostat housing not seated all the way from change out, Check top of transmission.
2. water pump leak near thermostat housing(from bad install)
3. Water pipe leaking down on back side of engine near water pup or thermostat connection side.
4. Connection at bottom of expansion tank, expansion tank at bottom has hairline crack.
