R60 tire tread
tire tread
I got a set of 19"s and one rite is different from the other 3 but the same size. 225/40/19 how safe is it to use? I'm hearing different thing. Some say if it's the same size it's fine some say not fine. Anyone in the same scenario or is running one different tread on the all4?
Are load and speed ratings the same? Is it made by the same manufacturer with the same treadwear rating? AWD reacts to differences in grip at each tire. Our VW 4Motion destroyed two serviceable tires in 200 miles one after the other before we could get to a dealer. The alignment was fine and new matched tires cured the problem.
Usually if you must run 3 of 1 and 1 of another You run 2 similar tires on the front, then the unmatched pair on the rear...
usually "safe" is in degrees....
You are not gonna suddenly die...
But in an extreme edge case scenario it maight make a difference.
19' tires with tiny sidewalls are often damaged....usually you but the same tire or a very similar one treadwise as a replacement.... Sounds like the prior owner just bought what was available...maybe due to time or $$ constraints.
I would not track the car, or drive it much harder than " granny style", but are you " safe? Mostly.
The all4 adds another lay of complexity...
Check the manual...but replacement tires are usually needed in similar outside diameter....not just the same size...yes, it is different. Tires list their size both as the number you know, and revolutions per mile when new....they actually vary a bit due to tread depth...
Know on many all wheel drive system, You damage ONE tire and you buy a new set to limit stress on the components unless you can get an EXACT MATCH, and then you put the new tire on a tire lathe to cut it down to match the wear on it to the others....
Yes..it is $$, but cheaper than 4 new ones or a bunch of mechanical parts...

I see two NanKangs, one Bridgestone, and one Conti on an All4 behind you at the next club event.
Trending Topics
The only Conti I see at 340 in that size is the summer only Extreme Contact DW.
The only Bridge I see at 400 in that size is the allseason RE970AS Pole Position.
Is that what you have?

This is not a good thing. The DW has far more grip than the other three, and below freezing temperatures it will turn into a rock hard gripless tire. That could be deadly. Seriously.
"The ExtremeContact DW (DW for Dry & Wet) is Continental Tire's Max Performance Summer tire developed for the drivers of sports cars, sports coupes and performance sedans. The ExtremeContact DW is designed to deliver good ride quality and serious performance on both dry and wet roads. Like all summer tires, the ExtremeContact DW is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice."

And the Bridgestones:
"The Potenza RE970AS Pole Position is Bridgestone's flagship Ultra High Performance All-Season tire developed for drivers looking to combine high speed capability with all-season traction for sophisticated sports cars, sporty coupes and high performance sedans. The Potenza RE970AS Pole Position is designed to provide predictable handling, traction and control on dry and wet roads, as well as in occasional light snow."

Good luck.

Yeah...don't mix extreme summer and allseasons...
Very different....grip and wear handling ...find a similar replacement... Maybe used to match wear if needed.
AGREED don't plan on keeping it that way.
