R60 Coolant Temp

I installed a set of Cravenspeed ngauges for coolant temp and turbo boost. They use OBDII plug in and seem to work great and look great. On the coolant temp "normal" operating temp usually runs around 215 degrees F (20-60 degree ambient air). If I switch to sport mode the temperature drops to around 180 within a minute or so. Can anyone explain this?

If it's an automatic, then I would attribute it to higher RPMs pushing more coolant through the radiator. I'll have to test that out using Dash Command.

It's supposed to do that.

Here's a thread about it. I've never monitored temp, so I can't say whether mine does it. From what I've read, it's designed to drop temp in sport mode.

i just tested all combinations of sport button on/off, A/C on/off and driving easy/hard

there was no difference at all in either oil or coolant temp, both stay between 220-230 under all conditions

Sigh. I wish I was out trying that instead of working. The thread to which chrunck linked has me intrigued. Mine's an auto, so I wonder...

Thanks for the comments and the link to the other thread on same subject. I was hoping someone from Mini would monitor these things and provide a definitive answer. Many of the comments make sense - ECU control, etc but would be nice to know the real engineering behind this. At least I confirmed my new gauge is not messed up! Thanks
