R60 Can't decide, '11 CMS or '14CM.
Can't decide, '11 CMS or '14CM.
I can't decide on which one I should get. I have a chance on buying a used 2011 CMS for about $23,500 with 25k miles or I can order a 2014 CM at sticker price. The used one does a few good options on it though. Trying to keep the price down as much as possible. It's difficult finding manual models anywhere.
I was in the same boat last year and went with the 2011 All4. It's a manual and had all the options I wanted with only 5000 miles.
It was a good choice but there are several reasons to go with a 2014.
* Upgraded clutch (stronger and better friction material)
* Latest software (throttle mapping improves takeoff with a clutch)
* Improved button placement (my opinion)
* Bigger front cupholders
* Driver side sun visor
* All the latest warranty parts (that the 2011 will need replacing within the next 5000 miles under warranty)
That said, you'll probably be happy with the 2011. I love mine and I'm working with my SA to upgrade my clutch and get the latest software. I would make the sale contingent on getting the new clutch installed

I'd probably go this route too if I was happy with the 2011 color and options. Make sure they put in a 2013 clutch, not a new 2011/2012. Some on the board here have reported that is what they got, which means it has to be done again later.
Also, check the 2011 chrome trim for wear. There was a bad batch of trim installed on some 2011 models that cracked and flaked pretty bad (e.g. the rear hatch release). This is a warranty issue, not a 'used car' thing you have to live with.
Some considerations: 2011 was the first model year release; they'll have had 3+ years to work through issues seen since then, both seen by consumers (like the clutch, side sun visor, peeling chrome trim, thermostat issues, some power window issues, sunroof rattle, etc.)and others that aren't publicized / enhancements.
How much of a warranty are you getting with a used car, if any? If none, then consider the cost of having to repair any items on this debut model year that need to be addressed; a new '14 will come with 3yr/36,000mi maintenance and a 4/48k warranty
If the options package on the '11 is what you want vs. the price for the same on a '14, I think the items above would weigh on me most. Personally, I'd go with the '14; but then I'm not the one looking to shell out another $20-$40k+!!
Good luck!

Update on my 2011 CMSA4
Just got it back from service today. They updated the computer with SIM-12-02-11 and the changes to the throttle map really make a difference. Takeoff from stop is a lot smoother, and it no longer has the throttle bump while engaging first gear.
This update is also supposed to address the throttle blip/stutter/stumble issue 2011 models sometimes get under load. That issue was intermittent anyway, so I won't know if that's any better for a while.
Anyway, if you go for the 2011, make sure you have them do the SIM-12-02-11 update.

I think some of the replies missed that the OP is deciding between a 2011 S All4 and a 2014 non-S. Many different factors to consider here.

Agreed - not only are there differences between model years, but there's the difference between the Cooper and Cooper S and further, the All4 option. All things considered, I think the 2011 CMS All4 is going to provide a better driving experience, so long as the clutch issue is fixed.
No, the 2011 is just an S, not an All4. Don't really need all the options but they are nice to have though. I would like to get the 2011 down to 21,000 but not thinking they will go that low.
