From what I can tell menus that don't use 'iPod Out' would still work. 'iPod Out' was something that was developed to make it so that car companies wouldn't have to go through the trouble of recreating the iPod interface. The iPod would just send out an analog video display and the car would display that like it would any other analog video. Now that it's gone, any companies still using it will just have to go through the trouble of creating their own interface, unless Apple has created something different that's easy to integrate. On the plus side, Apple worked with none other than BMW on iPod Out, so it's likely they've already done some work on the replacement. On the negative side, in dash car systems are usually pretty slow to get upgrades so the technology could already exist, but who knows when you'll see it.

Anything that uses other methods to get song info and control the unit I would expect to work with the adapter. So I'd expect people that just have the stereo wouldn't have any changes apart from needing the adapter.

And pay a licensing fee to Apple lest they impinge on any of Apple's precious IP.

Well played, Apple, well played.

Does anyone have a guess of whether the Pandora app interface will still work or does that use video out?

That being said I would be very surprised if they were doing anything on the "old" cars. Be prepared for an answer close to "what you bought is what you got."

Hopefully I'm wrong and there will be a new cable and some updates so this generation connected system doesn't turn into the equivalent of an 8 track deck before most people's leases expire. No matter what MINI does or does not do this time around, it's only a question a few years before that happens.

while this is ultimately apples undoing, MINI/BMW hasn't exactly been on the ball. It took them a year and a half to get a proper dock ($250) for the arm rest you had to buy, another $250. And it never did everything. There have been some y cable debacles as well. Misinformation seems to be the biggest problem. No one knows the correct setup, limitations and compatibility.

Just as I thought, everything will work fine except for a feature I don't use or like except for when showing off to friends and using the jailbroken display out feature (iPOD out) and watching video on the go that I can still use old ipods/ipads and the wife's 4S for. Not happy, but not upset.

I have been an apple user since 1981 and to some degree they have always moved us "forward", so I knew it would happen sooner or later.

My question is, with the normal ipod connectivity (not ipod out) showing artwork etc, how many people actually used the plugin for ipod functionality? I can say many of my bmw buds with idrive didn't even know what the plugin was and a few of my mini friends didn't even realize the plugin did anything.

I wanted mine to work because I paid for it. I've pretty much given up and all I use is the "just play my GD music" setting.

It does work and you got what you paid for. If you want it to keep working then keep the phone you have.

Sheesh....

I do all the time, the interface is faster and much better looking than going through external media source, and had the ability to display iOS messages. Many others found a loophole and used it to display maps, video or anything else from the phone.

Then you didn't make it all the way into Laurel.

Besides, I was in Annapolis.

My point is that you are coming across as being mad about something that neither side owes you. Apple has a right to change their product and MINI has a right to not support the new iPhone with current models. Bottom line is that if you want to upgrade you will lose functionality and that choice is all yours.

Not to argue, but someone hasn't read my book. I've had mine for 18 months. I paid for MINI connect. I paid for an arm rest. I've paid for three cradles at +/- $250 each. I've gone through the software update that made the cradle useless and switched most everything over to the cable. And things still are not 100% as advertised. Nowhere in there is anything about the Apple iPhone 5. It's all about MINI/BMW making promises, charging a fortune, and not knowing WTF they are doing. That's what has my knickers in a knot.

Then you have an issue with your system because I have played with one and it worked fine. This thread is about the iPhone 5, not your problems. If you move to a new phone they owe you nothing. The only thing they owe you is your current system to work within the specifications when it was manufactured.

Yep, I jailbroke my current iPhone so I could do that, the problem is that you can't use the radio when playing it. If I was still on unlimited data I may have used that feature a little more often. I do use analog video for my wife while we travel. Luckily we still have her 4S, old ipods and the iPad for that. This does show the future, I just hate it when it affects me

So much said in regards to the Y cable and it's adaptability for the 5. How about us poor suckers who bought, returned, exchanged, re-tried, experimented... to finally get the correct or as close as possible cradle to work our 4S. IOS6 is available as of Wednesday...
Take caution before D/Loading....sounds as the best operating system yet, but it seems it's always effected mini connected, mostly good, some not. Hopefully Mini Connected will follow up with another update to its app. As excited as I am for the 5, my CM is comfortable with 4S.

Not really. I have a "dumb phone" supplied by work for when working in the field. A personal smartphone, especially the latest and greatest, is not something I NEED. Sometimes I catch myself WANTing one, but it quickly goes away when I realize the money I'm saving by not purchasing the lastest sheeple device

I've been using iOS6 for months now (i'm a developer) and for me, everything that was working through the Y cable is working with the Gold Master of iOS6 that will be released next week.

Of course, as will all things, your mileage may vary. Just giving you my $.02
