R60 Why do our engines sound the way they do?
For the sake of....updating this engine idle sound decibel concern, I'll add my 2 cents.
BMW engines are direct injection and yet do not sound this way....that said, injector part no. 13537591623, have been superseded. With that supersession was a new injector ring kit that doesn't fit the old injectors and is supposed to quiet that racket down some.

By the way, I should mentioned that I'm not so much bothered by the ticking but rather the gruff sounding exhaust. Though part of this may be due to the single exhaust of my Cooper ALL4 (it doesn't have the dual exhaust of the S).
Here is the response I got from my SA when I asked about the start up engine noise: "Noise is caused by the turbocharger westgate. Per sim 18 01 10 the noise is caused by the turbocharger westgate. The westgate stays fully open during cold start to insure proper valve seating to meet stricter ulev2 emissions criteria. This noise is normal and necessary".
The Cooper ALL4 was offered in certain markets starting from the second half of last year. What is interesting is that the automatic version uses the same turbo engine as the S. See http://www.totalmini.com/forum/39-mi...yes-turbo.html
That is correct, and so far it is not available in North America and I would guess it won't ever be.

And to bring this thread back on topic, there was a Countryman One idling outside my office this morning and I tried to get a good listen at its noises (without bringing myself to the attention of the owner). While it also had some ticking the noises were noticeably less than mine. Doesn't the non-turbo (N16) also have DI? However, does it have valvetronic? If not, could that explain the differences in the ticking noises between the N16 and N18? Has anyone else here compared the two?
By the way, this would be a pre-2013 model from the lack of lettering on the back (not that I think this makes a difference).
