I thought this was just an issue because of not fitting larger sizes - but small doesn't work either. I had a small soda cup from McDonalds and it was too narrow at the bottom and wanted to tip over in the front cup holder. I ended up having to hold it between my legs. Less then ideal. It seems like "medium" cups might work best - be it coffee or soda.

Very interesting difference between markets- I have never ever had a problem with fitting any of cups (McDonald's, Burger King, my own bottle) in my Countryman.
But...about 10 years ago we had our family Dodge Intrepid, imported from Canada and we had the opposite problem- cup holders were just too big. Every cup constantly slided in the hodler, sometimes it fell off.

One idea for DIY guys- http://www.minigenuineparts.co.uk/mi...9.809.203.html
If you can find some holder with flat bottom and proper size, you can couple it and make your own Center Rail cup holder

Glad to report I found a 20 oz coffee cup that fits perfectly in the cup holder. It is still tall and blocks the toggles but the coffee cup does its job very nicely especially the size of it. Had a difficult time finding a cup larger than 16 oz. and was very happy to finally find one large enough for me.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I told my GF about this discussion, and she says it's the same on our current R53. She just uses the cup holder that's to the rear of the hand brake. She said our CM on order (with bench seat) has a holder at the rear end of the rail. She says she checked it out when we test drove a CM before we placed our order. Funny, that's the last thing I would have paid attention to on a test drive. Guess we all have our own priorities...

Anyone recall ever seeing anything like what I'm describing? TIA

Yes, they're called "Bar Buoy". Used them on golf carts & boats and they work great (especially when cornering)

Are there screw holes to match up? I may have rip mine from my '06 cabrio before trade-in. Then again I have ruined a radio and aircon controls when something spilled out of it. It might be better for my physically and financially if I can't fit a 44oz coke in this new car.

Could part of the reason Euro's are on average fitter than us is because not only do they walk alot, eat fresher less processed foods, but because they can't take giant cola's or fattening coffee drinks with them everywhere they go?

Ehhhhhhh, I need my coke to wake up in the morning.

For some reason I found the Ariel Atom comment amusing. It brought Visions of Jeremy Clarkson saying "and new for the '12 Ariel Atom in order to help sales in the US market, not a v10, not a Dual turbo v6 for this minimal track monster, but a supersize cup holder."

Even small, narrow-based travel mugs do not fit. This is not about trying to fit a Big Gulp - just regular sized mugs.
Completely disagree about the fingers. Those fingers have caused nearly empty cups to shoot out and spill everywhere.

Cupholder engineering should probably be a mechanical engineering's focus area in school.

I haven't had any issues with 'small' sodas from McDonalds and Burger King. Quite happy with the cup holders so far as they will keep my fat *** from buying large sodas now.

They also hold soda cans just fine.

So I realized later this is just because I didn't "push" it into the holder far enough (I was worried about breaking something). But honestly I've had zero problems with cup holders. Venti sized starbucks (the largest) - cans of tea and soda, etc. I actually like that they grip so well - so no complaints anymore.

Yeah, no more complaints here. I'm just extra careful with styrofoam cups. The only one in the car so far that buys any larger drinks is my husband, and he can just hold onto his drink. He doesn't buy that many anyway.

Yep, a standard Gen 1 cupholder, became standard in 2005 I think?

Very cool, but what keeps it from going airborne?

It looks like the center shoulder belt goes through a rear strap...but that still doesn't seem very stable. Actually, the product looks like the BMW tank bag for my R1200RT!

Hmmmm....

I ordered a Cup Pilot for when I fly - it hangs on the back of an airplane seat via a hook or loop of string. I have found that it works great in my Mini for large cups IF you hook it in the glove box. I also put a bit of felt on the back of the flat metal hook so as not to scratch the plastic.

www.cup-pilot.com

A cup holder also designed for your car - The Cup-Pilot has a specially designed hook that will fit in the air vents of almost every car. Originally designed for the Porsche 911 and Boxster models, it fits most other vehicles. The hook is coated with polyurethane to protect the parts to which it is attached. The unit is installed by simply bending the hook as necessary to fit the specific location chosen.
