Can maintenance program extension be purchased later?

One dealer has told me yes and the other no. Which is the right answer?

The finance person at my dealer said yes, but the price would be higher the longer I waited. Not sure if the part about the price was true or if it was just a sales tactic.

I think I'm going to skip the maintenance plan and put that money towards a warranty.

The finance guy told me you purchase the extended maintenance AND warranty at a later date, as long as it's before the end of the current maintenance or warranty. He also told me that although MINI can't force you to maintain your car at a dealership, the computer inside the car records EVERYTHING (he called it the little black box) and if you got maintenance done any where else, and they didn't do it to MINI's standards (which they don't release to indies on a regular basis) warranty claims can be denied. I purchased the extended maintenance, and in 4 yrs I'll revisit the extended warranty.
