Engine Oil Level via Onscreen Display

I've got a free day today, so I'm trying different program options with NCSExpert...

I turned on the Oil Level menu.. the menu shows a pic of a MINI and the engine highlighted (see attached pics).
The options are to view the oil level and to calibrate the level... since MINI went to the trouble of programming this, I'm thinking that there may be a place to put a sensor and hopefully a blank plug for it.

When I calibrate, it says there is no sensor available, I figured that would be the case..

Is this an order-able option for the car (didn't see anything in the manual)
Is there a location on the engine where the the sensor would go?

Cool! So it looks like some kind of service menu that expands on the idiot lights. Maybe you have to enter some kind of special code or control combination? Or they cheaped out for MINIUSA models and left out the important bits...

I haven't seen anything like this, although there is probably a patent on it. My first thought would be that a float level would be required in the pan. This would allow a check level before starting the engine and would be a blessing for those who can't remember to check the dipstick.

DIPSTICK!! There's an idea - a dipstick with built-in sensors. No doubt one very expensive dipstick with a wireless signal to the instrumentation. Another warning light on the dash for Low level.

It's time now for someone who knows something about this to explain it to us.

This is a feature already on newer BMW's.
My X5 had it, I don't have the X5 anymore, but it didn't have a dipstick. The only way to check the oil level was from the menu... maybe the sensor replaced where the dipstick connected to the block...

I suppose a fiche showing the euro-only bits might be an avenue to follow. Then again, just because it's coded doesn't mean that it's actually in production...

Perhaps you have to have the iPhone 4 armrest snap-in?

Looked at my wife's car.. the oil level sensor is attached to the oil pan (makes sense)... took a look under the CM and no place for a sensor... oh well....
