Stupid New Owner Question...

:impatient

About half the time when I open the driver door, the boot/bonnet open warning light flashes and chimes, then is quiet... It's not on steadily, like it would be if the boot/bonnet sensors where active, and it only happens when I open the door. I've not been able to pin down a pattern (I thought at first that it was telling me that a window/door/sunroof wasn't closed, but that doesn't seem to be the case).

Whatever is Junior trying to tell me? It's not covered in the manual...

Thanks!!!!

I have noticed that the boot/bonnet light has been on a couple of times on Guinness when I have pulled away. It turns out that I have had to really slam the boot closed in order for it to fully catch. When I have checked it, it looks closed and feels closed, but apparently it's open just enough for the sensor to detect.

My light was on solid, though, so perhaps you have a loose connection somewhere?

I did notice that the boot sensor is a bit insensitive, and needs a good firm almost-slam to register - but in this case the light stays on and doesn't chime at me...

Hmmmmm

The plot thickens...

So - how's Guinness doing?

Yeah, I've had the same thing. At least now I know to just go back and reshut the boot or bonnet... The bonnet does seem rather tough to slam down due to the hydraulics I think.

Hmm, the chime is surely a mystery to me. Did you check to see if both left and right sides of the bonnet are latched? Maybe one side latched and the other didn't. I found out the hard way that the bonnet has two latches - my MA accidentally put a tiny dent in Guinness' bonnet trying to get the passenger side latch to shut all the way (they are going to fix it).

I hope you can figure it out so Junior can stop fussing at you!

Does this happen when you are getting out of the car after driving? I think it happens because the key is still near the ignition. I think this is so you don't accidentaly lock your keys in the car. I do sometimes get one short chime when I go to get out of the car. My doors lock automatically when I drive and unlock when I remove the key from the ignition, so I know that it's not chiming because I left the key in the ignition, but apparently it's close enough to make my MINI worried I might lock myself out! Just a theory...

It happens both when I open the door to get in and when I open it to get out - five pings and flashes from the boot/bonnet warning, then it quiets down.

I'll see if it does anything different if my key is, say, 20 feet awy...

Thanks for the idea!

Me too! It's frustrating to know that he's trying to tell me something, and I just can't understand...

We'll figure it out, though - call it a relationship-building exercise...

I've had this happen when my sunroof is open. I should say sunroof feature because it's a cabrio. Hope this helps.

Bonnet/Boot Lamp

If you own a R52 (conv.) It may need a updated rear hatch switch installed
that has a longer plunger on the tip. Lamp comes on also in the R50/53 may
need to have the rear hatch lock adjusted outward slighly. Have also seen bad micro switchs in the rear hatch lock or hood that can even be intermittant.

Figured it out...

I get the warning beeps if I open the door with either a window or the sunroof open.

I guess it's just Junior's way of ensuring that his insides don't get wet if it rains!

Thanks to all for the responses!

I'm a new owner as well (3 days in all) and I noticed the same thing also. You just have to slam it to keep the light from blinking when you drive or open the door. The sensor is extreamly sensitive.
