Convenience Opening Mode not available

Has anyone else run into this? I asked my MA if the "Convenience Opening" Mode could be programmed on my new Mini (Set to arrive in port on 10Mar06). This was his response:

The programmable option that opens and shuts the top and windows is not available in "this neck of the woods" due to too many complaints of this option being spontaneously activated by cell phone radio waves. Imagine parking at Angels Stadium and safely locking your valuables in your car and enjoying 9 innings…and when you return to your car the top is down exposing everything. Hmmmm. Not Good.

For the record, my "neck of the woods" is Orange County, California and my dealer is Crevier Mini.

I haven't seen any mention of this issue anywhere yet so I'm going to cross post on the Cabrio forum as well.

It's available, they are just recommending against it. If you really want it, they can do it. I've heard some complaints about people opening their windows and sunroof with the key in their pocket, don't know of anyone personally.

that sounds rather spurious, along the lines of the "i press the brake in my audi and the car accelerates". cell phones and keyless entry systems operate on different frequencies (315Mhz and 800Mhz/1.9Ghz). i'm not a telcom expert, but i thought the whole reason for assigning frequencies to various technologies was to prevent interference.

i suspect the reported concerns are operator error or using the angels stadium example someone have a keyless entry system close enough to the mini's to cause the problem. in which case i suppose the problem still exists.

Not only do they operate on totally different frequencies, the harmonics aren't really there to affect it, either. Not ONLY that, but the key sends and encrypted signal to the car, which has to match. Your MA needs to stop talking out his/her hind end.

That, and the top coming open caused by a cell phone 200 yards away is less likely than a meteor striking your MINI.

What a load.

Lol! That's hilarious! You Californians are a real hoot. Next thing you know you'll all be required to wear those kill switch leashes they have on seadoos and treadmills. Everytime you go for a walk you'll have to wear the leash and if you step into a road every car within 100yds of you will stall. I love it!

Regardless of the liberal politics here, at least I'm able to drive with the top down all year (did so yesterday) except for the three or fours days a year that it rains. I see that it's about 26°F in Bangor about now. It's about 59°F here now and should climb to ~65°F this afternoon. Can't wait to drop the top on the Miata (will be giving it to my Mom when the Mini arrives) and cruise back up the coast.

My daughters can't wait to ride in the back with the top down since they couldn't ride in the Miata since they're too young to sit in the front seat with the air bags.

Back on topic though - I responded back to my MA with the statement that I understand the concern but accept the risk. Also, the manual says I can do it so I want it activated. I'll post his reply when I get it.

MA Response

So here is my MAs response to my insistence that they program the Convenience Opening Mode on Emma as well as leave the front license plate frame loose:

I have already made the powers to be aware that we do not want a license plate holder on the front of your car. I will follow up as the vehicle hits port. A waiver will have to be signed regarding this matter as well as the Convenience Opening Mode. If it is still possible to do…you can bet I’ll get it done. All I strive for is your complete satisfaction and providing an enjoyable purchase for you and your Family!
Still a little bit of BS but nothing I can't live with. Thanks to all for the providing the feedback that got me to push my MA on this issue.
