May sound like a dumb question but I still need an answer.
I am preparing to replace the timing chain guides/rails and tensioner on my 2005 Mini Cooper S.
I have been reading up on this job and some say that the guides/rails can be replaced without removing the cam gear others say you have to remove the cam gear.
Which is correct?
Also does the tensioner have to be installed in the extended or retracted position?

You do not have to remove the cam gear to change the guides. Tensioner should be installed in the retracted position.

Timing chain cover/oil pump can be removed through the passenger side wheel well after liner is removed. You must remove the belt tensioner first. Not a bad idea to replace the idler pulley at the same time. You'll obviously need new cover gaskets that come in a set. You also need a new front engine oil seal. Here's a great video on removing/replacing the timing chain cover.

 

Over the past few days, I did the following:
1. removed the supercharger to change the oil. The pulley side had less than an ounce of oil and the water pump side had no oil. I put the required amount in and reinstalled it with the kit I purchased from Pelican parts. I hope the supercharger is not damaged. However there is no abnormal noise coming from the supercharger.
2. I replaced the timing chain guides/rails and a new tensioner.
3. I replaced the belt tensioner and idler pulley and installed a new belt.
I still have a rattling sound from the engine and I am now suspecting that the noise is coming from the rocker arms.
If that is the case should I replace just the rockers with new ones since they are not adjustable or should I replace the complete rocker arm assembly ?
Are the hydraulic lifters serviceable? I understand that they can become stuck.
One other thing, Can I remove the belt and start the engine for a short period of time to see where the rattling noise is coming from?
