Mini R52 manual won't go into gear

I have a 2005 R52 Mini Cooper S convertible with a 6 speed manual transmission with 140,000 miles. It will start fine but will not go into gear:
1. Without the clutch to the floor and with the car running I can shift into all 6 speeds and reverse, the shifter feels normal, nothing holding up or binding, no noise. First thought was the shifter linkages
2. I pulled the air filter housing to see the shifter linkage expecting one of them to be broken off, while someone was shifting into all the gears the shift linkages were moving and connected to the transmission but the transmission will not go into gear.

I can start the car, put it in any gear, let out the clutch and the car is in neutral where I can manual push the car.

Any guidance on where I go next to troubleshoot the problem

I have a 2003 doing the same thing. Did you ever find out what was wrong?
