New to the forum, just bought my second mini as a project.
Hello, Second time mini owner here. I picked up an 08 MCS Auto a few months ago from a guy that replaced the timing chain and after the replacement it starting throwing a bunch of code. The codes are reference voltage codes for the Throttle Body, Throttle position sensor, MAP sensor and a few other ones. I have replaced all those components and shot all the wires to verify there are no shorts or open wires between those parts and the ECU. I've also taken off the valve cover and re-done the timing with the hold down tool. The car runs but extremely rough and is stuck in limp mode.
I've also done a compression test, which left me more puzzled than when I started.
The first test with/out a cap off oil poured in each cylinder yielded:
Before Oil in each cylinder After a cap of oil in each
1 - 100 psi 1 - 80-82 psi
2 - 100 2 - 110
3 - 80 3 - 100
4 - 100 4 - 110
This messed me up, the problem moved from cylinder 3 to 1. This makes me think there is still a timing issue but also makes me think piston/valve.
Anyways that's where I'm at with my new mini. I think I should have some some research before my purchase and stayed way away from the n14 motors. If anyone could point me to some good threads to start reading on, I'd appreciate it. I'm basically at the point where I'm going to pull the head and have it redone or try to recoup my 2k by parting it out or selling it to someone else that wants to deal with it.
Happy Monday

Here is one thing to consider: The mileage is most likely over 100K miles, which is the time to replace the cam chain and guides. The valve guides are a known weak point and it the valves are not seating well, the oil in the cylinders will not help, but it does seem to indicate the valves are not closing properly. (ther may even be burnt valves/seats.
Keep us posted on this.
Another thing to consider, is the codes. It may be prudent to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or so. This will cause the ECU to reboot to the proper settings.
Congrats and good luck in getting it purring like it should!
Welcome to the NAM family!
