Hello everyone! Thank you for this forum. I am looking forward to learning more about my 2004 Mini Cooper. She is in wonderful condition but I am in need of a spare key. 2004 Mini Cooper 2004 Mini Cooper
I just imported her into Canada from the USA.
Hi and welcome to NAM!
Very clean R50! It looks like it is well cared for!
Keys are not cheap!
Hi Wayne, I'll have to see how to go about getting a spare key. I believe the cost is around $300?
Thanks for letting me know what number my Mini is. What does R50 stand for?
As for her care, she's is in excellent condition and has never been driven in the snow. She finally passed the Provincial Safety Inspection after getting the Daytime Running lights installed. I'm in the process of having a shelter built for her for the Quebec winter months.
And,
while looking this morning on the R50 topic and trying to find a good article to link, I came across a video I've never seen before which offers an inside glimpse which was cool to watch, so thanks for the prompt to push me googling!
The advertising in the early days was simply fantastic and there are many many examples to cite and examine --- in fact it'd be an exhaustive exercise and ti do it justice would require a thread all on its own...
...so I just picked a print ad with the same color as your car:
True to life:
indeed, the R50 was a match which lit the enthusiast flames of passion!
Welcome! Nice looking R50! Great color combo! (I have a 2005 R50). Any interior pics to share? Dragon Slaying RaceR50! (Owed for almost 14 years, slightly modded, 160k miles and counting!)

Hi Nancy,
If you had two keys, you could have programed a new key to your car. Why it is set up like this, I don't really know, but because of this you will need to have it programmed by a locksmith that does Mini, or a dealer (try to stay away from dealers, as they will find a 1000 things wrong with your car. It is all about the money to them!)
The R50 designation has already been shown here.
You will surely enjoy driving this little car and they are so much fun!
Now, it it has an automatic transmission, have the fluid changed right away. The dealer will tell you this never needs to be done, but it has proven to need changing every 30 to 40 thousand miles.
If it has the manual transmission, the you need about liters of Redline MTL transmission fluid. It will make it shift easier and help to keep the gears in good shape.
If you go to the gen1 section on our site, you will get a ton of good information, to help you keep it in good shape!

Thanks Colin, beautiful car! I created an album for this forum where you will be able to see some interior photos. See if the album link works. I'm new to this forum.

Thanks, Wayne! Good info to know about the automatic transmission. I'm located on the east coast of Canada and know of no locksmith who will be able to program a new key for me and the nearest dealer is about 7 hours away. I just passed an extensive safety inspection so my little car is in a-one shape. It would be great if once they make a copy of my original key, they will be able to mail it up to me, rather than drive back down there to get it. Either way, it will be worth it
