New Guy Here

hi, everyone, I'm new to Minis and am sure I'll have a bunch of questions. Just picked up a '07 S with some major coolant leaks and noises.

Welcome to NAM.

If a hardtop/sunroof you have the n14 engine. How many miles on the car? Do you know the number of past owners? Any maintenance records? Some, not all, of the n14's have issues with the timing chain guide, suggest you check out the Gen2 Stock/Problems Issues section.

Thanks, I don't really have a lot of info on the car, the person I bought it from was pretty clueless and was going to let carmax have it for $300.00. I've found the coolant leak at the thermostat housing and it appears there may be one around the water pump. It runs but has a bad knocking sound near the timing cover. I read in one spot that the tensioner was hydraulic and might have bled down but I really think it needs a timing set. I've got some of the parts and a Bentley manual ordered, just have to wait until the 26th for the parts to start arriving.

If that knock is anything close to a rattle, suggest you do not start the car at all. If the guide goes the valves hit the pistons and the rest of the story is that the engine becomes a boat anchor.

You'll find a lot of threads in the Gen2 forum on replacing the thermostat and the timing chain for the N14 engine. Good luck, do a search and a lot of reading, then don't be afraid to ask questions. There's several members who have done rebuilds and are incredibly helpful.
