New here, bought a 2013 Cooper and have fuel economy questions

Computer is saying I'm getting about 27-ish mpg. I've been driving about 75% city and 25% freeway. This seems low. Is it because I haven't broken in the engine yet? I'm at about 157 miles on it total. I see people with S's that get avg about 30+, and I don't have an S.

Thanks!

How heavy is your lead foot? It'll get better as you go along and get used to driving it (if you haven't had a mini before).

I came from a 2.3L manual Mazda3s and now have an automatic Cooper. I guess it's heavier since I'm used to a zippier start. I'll try to granny it a bit and see what I get over the next week. Thanks!

Take a longer trip...bet you would see much better.

The 75% city is killing your mpg!!

PS
One tip....many mini's burn oil...even when new, especially when run kinda hard...so check your oil!!

I did more driving and i'm up to 30.1 so not too shabby.

Burn oil? Wait they told me I didn't have to come in for an oil change for 10k miles. What gives?

Yeah, that's a lot of city driving. It's still not bad at all but it's hard to go above 30mpg for most. The OBC isn't accurate at all so if it's saying 27 you're probably getting a couple mpg less. I've got 42-43 mpg average through my first four fill ups (just bought a new 2013 about a month ago and I'm at around 2,400 miles) but the OBC has shown me 45-46 mpg average for the tank. Again, it's not accurate but it at least gives you a ballpark figure.

Just driving an automatic is going to bring it down somewhat. I've got the manual and I drive about 76-85% highway so that is why my average is much higher. Drive it as easy as you can and leave the instant mpg meter up as often as you can . I find that helps me achieve a better mpg average.

Some MINI's can burn up to 1 qt of oil evry 1000 miles....
the NON-S's...not as common...but it still happens for some...
Till your car is broken in well....I would check the oil every couple fill-ups....
In doing the math....if you were at the higher end of the burn rate...you could BLOW YOUR MOTOR from lack of oil in just 3000 miles and STILL have had oil use "within spec".
That would be a $6500+ NON-WARRANTY mistake!!
