You have two of the best hot hatches out there, so drive both and enjoy!
In my very limited wheel time in the Mini, it is interesting how very different the two cars are. The GTI is more smooth and refined, whereas the Mini feels more raw and aggressive. I think the contrast between the two will keep things interesting.
The GTI will definately remain the road trip / highway default (especially with 2-kids and 4-doors). The Mini seems better suited for in-town zipping around and general fun. I'm looking forward to getting to know it better.
