Hi all,

I've started up a "Go Fund Me" appeal for my classic Mini - check it out and give if you can...

Ahhhh - it's not cynical - it's about keeping a classic on the road !
And that's a very negative post if you don't mind me saying so.
Click the link, see the whole story, you might even feel like joining in...

I think danny's post was rather tempered; especially considering the fact that your first post here does ask for monetary donations so you can fix up your own Mini. That's not just a little bit nervy; the phrase "***** like a bull moose" comes to mind.

Hmmmm

OK - I geddit... You think I'm a lazy limey with his hand out for no better reason other than being a lazy limey. Maybe I should explain a little further...

I'm a single parent with three kids. I have two jobs (one daytime, one at night from home) to put food in mouths, shoes on feet and school uniforms on backs (all UK kids have to have school uniform and it's not cheap). The Mini is not a "hobby" or a luxury - it's our only car and it needs work to keep it on the road. Yes, I can do a lot of what needs doing and I do - but there's a limit to my technical capability and my time so I thought maybe I'd put out a request to like minded souls and see if anyone felt like helping out a little.

Maybe it's a cultural issue - I put the same link on the UK Mini forum and had very different responses - maybe they actually read the background notes on "gofundme" before rushing to a value judgement and attacking someone who's just trying to get his kids to and from school safely.

Ho Hum...

PS - to Jim Michaels: The "foreign aid" quip is really dumb by the way...
No offence mate but you just confirm the global stereotype:

I just think it's in poor taste to ask for charity with your first post on this forum. If a regular contributor here needed a few bucks towards a similar goal, I'd be happy to chip in a few dollars. I did read your donation site before I made my first post.

Right on. I even think it's in poor taste when new members ask a QUESTION as their first post, without an intro thread. It's just poor forum etiquette. And if that's a "cultural" thing, so be it. In spite of your intentions, that came off badly.

But I do sympathize with your plight, and earnestly wish you the best.

Tony: Of course we went to the link first; how could we not do so? The link indicates that you created your gofundme account October 28, 2011, with the goal of raising $3000 for your Mini ($1000 for new paint). It also indicates that $0 has been raised so far, but that may be just from stingy Americans. Thanks to generous Brits, you should have have your Mini painted and all fixed-up real soon.

For over 35 years I had people knocking on my door asking for help with all manner of crises. Those who were not just passing through town I spent time figuring out the best way to get them what they actually needed, which often wasn't money. In this case I'd ask the following questions. Fully restored, how much is the car worth? What is it worth in its current condition? I am totally clueless as to the market for used Minis in GB, but it might be the case that the car could be sold for enough to buy a cheaper car, less iconoclastic than a Mini, but more reliable. Isn't the real need transportation for mom and the kids, not owning a restored classic?

Just my 2 cents worth.

1. Go to "NORTH AMERICAN Motoring" Forum.
2. Create account.
3. Ask for money.
4. Get mad when people aren't willing to shell out their hard-earned money to a name and a link on a forum.
5. Proceed to attempt to insult those whom you are asking charity of.
6. ????
7. PROFIT!!!

Seems legit to me.

Cheapest form of journalism there is. Since a fair percentage of any given population is clueless, it takes very little effort to spend a few hours getting statements from people on the street and editing out the cogent ones. I also noted that some of the same ignorami are used more than once.
