looking for song suggestions for the ride home
This has been so much fun! I've got about 2 weeks left until its mine but below is what I've got on my tentative playlist. There is plenty of music to get me home and then some in case I "Take the Long Way Home" (I think I've got that on vinyl - showing my age!)
Besides the great suggestion on this forum, I searched through my digital music and searched iTunes with relevant words (car, drive, road etc) I found out that there is an iTunes essentials Classic Road Trip list of 25 songs. Check it out!
My list (so far, alphabetically; next I have to figure out order)
Cars: Gary Numan
Crosstown Traffic: Hendrix
Drive: Incubus
Drive South: John Hiatt (since that's the direction I'll be heading home)
Everyday is a Winding Road: Sheryl Crow
Free Ride: Edgar Winter Group
Good Times Roll: The Cars
Highway Star: Deep Purple
Holoholo Ka'a: Willie K (a hawaiian song meaning Joy Ride)
I Can't Drive 55: Sammy Hagar
Life is a Highway: Tom Cochrane
Middle of the Road: Pretenders
Night Rider: **** Dale
Olinda Road: Barry Flanagan (hawaiian slack key about a lovely area on Maui)
On the Road Again: Willie Nelson
On the Road to Find Out: Cat Stevens
Pump it Up: Elvis Costello
Road to Nowhere: Talking Heads
The Road's My Middle Name: Bonnie Raitt
Slow Down: Beatles
Slow Ride: Foghat
Wallisville Road: Lyle Lovett
Note that I did not include the Beatles "Drive My Car": I used that as the first song for my Subaru when my son was 6 months old. I certainly didn't think at the time that my baby would be driving that car! Maybe he will get to drive the Mini someday but not for a while!

Looks like your car is about 4 days away.
Someone already mentioned "Red Barchetta" by RUSH.
How about "Pride and Joy" by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Bonnie Raitt also played a version that I may add to my first ride home.
Great thread.
Ted.

I love that song and it certainly is appropriate! I've been trying to keep this first mix with car/road type titles but I think I'm going to have to do another one about how much I love my car!
This is one of my favorite bands/driving songs. Would be real cool for a first drive
Don't go home, just keep driving!

So true! I noticed that wonderful sound when I took the test drive.
adding a few more possiblitlies:
Cruise Control: Bruce Hornsby
Stop Stop: Black Keys
Detour Ahead: Billie Holiday
Day Tripper: Beatles
Up Around the Bend: Creedence
Quick and Running: Charlie Hayden/Pat Metheney
Travels: Pat Metheney
Crossroads: Clapton
Start Me Up: Stones (or is this too obvious? But the start button is new to me!)
That gets me well over 2 hours of music - now I'm starting to think what my route home will be!

Song from Three Dog Night that usually plays in my mind's soundtrack when I go bike riding, but still a good cruising song--
One more for your Subi and MINI--
And since MINI owners are not lemmings in shiny metal boxes--

DIERKS BENTLEY "Free and Easy Down the Road I Go"
---Ain't no tellin' where the wind might blow
Free and easy down the road I go
Livin' life like a Sunday stroll
Free and easy down the road I go
Free and easy down the road I go
If you only get to go around one time
I'm gonna sit back and try to enjoy the ride
