Convertible top issue

I have a 2005 convertible. Last week, as I was closing the top, the right passenger side made this horrible crunching noise as it was latching into place. I took it to my mechanic who has always been very fair. He gave me a price of over $4600 to replace the frame assembly----as it 'might' happen to the other side, as it is a cheap plastic part. Cheap!
He said that there were several parts that had to be replaced, including the "mechanism"-so better to replace the entire assembly.
I called BMW here in San Antonio, they quoted me $3200. Better but,---wow.

BMW replaced the top January, 2009. Of course, no longer in warranty.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to proceed? Car has about 80,000 miles and is in great shape at point.
