steering wheel and padlock warning light is on

hello from panama, I have a friend that took his 2007 Mini Cooper S to the dealers shop and could not tell him why the red light was on. the warning light is a steering wheel and a padlock together and it is a red light. he is concerned because I told him, when you get a red warning light whatever problem you have needs to be delt with right away. I could not find the meaning of this light in the owners manual, can anybody tell me what it means and is it serious.

Hello Alfred,

From page 125 of the 2007 MINI Cooper S Owners Manual:

Lights up in red:
Electric steering wheel lock malfunctioning.
The engine can no longer be started.
If applicable, do not switch off the engine.
Contact your MINI Dealer.

Lights up in yellow:
Electric steering wheel lock engaged.
Move the steering wheel before starting the engine.

See attached.

Lots of these threads, but no one seems to post a definitive resolution to the issue. I live in Fargo, so a trip to the dealership is not easily done. Experienced guidance about fixes would be appreciated.
