AC issues Help!

I am a relatively new member. Our 06 R53 S has been great fun, but the AC has quit at 31k miles, 7 months after warranty expiration. Is this typical? I am told that the compressor is dead. My Nissan has 130k miles with an original compressor... what gives? any advice is welcome!
