I think an SCCA/BMW street survival course would be a good first step.

Yes your local BMW club should be able to hook you up with the street survival school. It will be educational and fun.

Not MINI specific, but I thought the Skip Barber driving school was well worth the time/money.

I that it is an excellent idea, let him learn how to drive correctly, most kids are going to put the pedal to the metal, it's best to know how to do it the right way and perhaps he will also learn self restaint.

Yes I think the SCCA/BMW Street Survival School (NASA hosts similar event) would be a good first school for a 17 year old, then maybe an HPDE like http://www.minidriving.com/ later, like 18th B-Day.

Back when my kid was that age, I knew we would kill each other if I attempted to teach him how to drive.

So, I checked the yellow pages, and found a "Walt's Driving School" locally. The name alone, gave me lots of confidence in their ability. I hired them, and we both lived thru his learning-to-drive stage.
