First time MINI owner, and I'm loving it so far. The driving is a pleasure, but I have to say that as a music junkie and an audio tinkerer, I'm already thinking about replacing the stock amp and speakers.

Welcome! I've had my MINI Cooper S Clubman less than a month. Do you have the standard radio or the Harmon/Kardon radio?
Can you replace the stock amp or is it integrated into the radio? There are so many non-sound system functions controlled through the speedometer controls, I'd be a little worried about improving it.

I have the standard radio, and you're right -- it's almost impossible to replace the head unit. However, apparently, you can put in an external amplifier and attach it to the existing HU.
Among other things, there's an Alpine upgrade that MINI dealers sell for just that purpose. I am trying to get some details on the amp involved, because I'm a little curious about the impedance mismatch, but...
