Buying first MC

Hey there. I'm new to the forum and at the present do not own the much coveted MC. I've been looking now and have a question for the experienced cooper folks. I've been test driving a 2003 MC 5 speed. There is a ton of noise coming from behind the steering column. Just getting out of first sounds like a high whizzing noise. I've driven plenty of standard transmission cars, but never a MINI. Is this normal? Gut is telling me no; dealer is telling me yes. Thoughts? They are asking $14,500 for it with 60K miles. I feel that's a bit steep.
There are a ton for sale out there but wanted to know if this is normal or not. Thanks for your insight!

Ben

Hello Ben, that whizzing could be the power steering pump and they are louder on a MINI then most other cars it's an early MINI thing. If you do a search on the MINI PS pump here on NAM you'll find out about the issues.

Also be sure and check the build date on the drivers door to see if it's an early or late 2003.

Is 14,500 too high, it's hard to say without know more about the MINI. Posting more details will allow NAM members to help you better.

Is 14 500 too high? yes!!!! especially 60k on the clock. I sold my '05 with 26k for 17 a month ago. Keep looking. An individual will give you the best deal, the stealer will only rob you they make a lot of money off of used cars. Look for a car that has been cared for, not modded up that will be your best buy. A 3rd car situation will net the most cared for car. "The weekend car, used in nice weather" not a dd through the rain and snow / salt. '05, '06 are the most desirable and reliable of the first gen MINI. they have the better 6sp manual- stay away from the CVT it can get prohibitively expensive. Some have had good luck others needed deeper wallets.

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it I'm looking at another 2003 MINI S. It has 73K on it and seems to be in pristine condition. It has the sport package, the intelligent package, cold weather package, has the dual sunroofs, running flats and all that jazz. He's asking $12,500 for his and is actually considering a swap with me. He's needing a truck and I'm considering swapping a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab in pristine condition with 70K miles.

I plan on having his checked out by a mechanic, but may have found my first MINI!
