Hello from Myrtle Beach, SC
Hi everyone. I'm actually glad to have found this site... I'd been trying to find a North American based Mini forum to help me research.
Hopefully I'll be ordering a Cooper or a Cooper S in the next few weeks, my local Mini dealer is over 2 hours away in Charleston so I have to get down there for a test drive. This site has been very helpful in figuring out what I want and need on the car.
My current car is a modified 2002 Subaru WRX wagon which actually looks like a Mini's older brother, the one that lifts weights and that Mom wonders if he's doing steroids. I'm looking for something fun for my commute that is much better on gas which brought me looking at the Mini's in the first place.
I've been an auto enthusiast for a while, and spent some time as a co-owner of a tuning shop so hopefully I'll have some contributions to the site, though I'm not planning on doing a lot of modifications to it, the Subaru will stay my "weekend car".
I'll probably have a lot of questions at first, but I'll try to search and get some answers before posting anything obvious.
Nice to be here...
Derek

Derek, first off, welcome to NAM and congrats on your decision to join the MINI community.
If you're looking for a fine introduction to the world of MINI, you may want to take a trip to Charleston in a week or so for when the MINI Takes the States rally hits town.
http://blog.minitakesthestates.com/2...ton-rally.html
This might also get you psyched for other events, which you as a MINI owner are obligated to attend, such as MINIs on the Dragon (which will definitely cement the MINI as your primary vehicle for fun.
) which is held at Deals Gap, NC.
If you're ever up in the Greenville area, feel free to send me a message and we'll meet up. Good luck with your MINI!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.
Thanks for letting me know about the Mini Takes the States stop in Charleston, wbarnhill. My wife and I are actually planning a trip to Mini of Charleston in the next couple of weeks to test drive some cars and check the R56 out in person, so maybe planning to do it on the 16th might be a good idea. My parents live in Simpsonville, and my father is jealous already of me getting the Mini, so I know the area well... lots of good roads around Greenville to enjoy.
I'm hoping to have my Mini by September Twister, so I'll definitely be up for coming out and hanging with you guys when you come down to the beach.
Worse things could happen to me, Red Dragoon, currently my Suby has been developing a lot of expensive issues to fix, so my driving for fun time has been reduced to zero in an effort to keep the car reliable for daily driving. I'm not ready to give up on it yet, but figured with a good daily driver that I'll enjoy driving, then if the Suby finally breaks something serious, then I'm just out a towing bill while I'm waiting to afford to fix it. I'm very much looking forward to being able to drive for fun again.
Paleo, congratulations on the purchase... I hope to be joining the ranks very soon.
The big question right now is the Cooper vs the Cooper S... and I'm balancing the better gas mileage versus 50% more power and torque question. The difference in price isn't really significant, but from a visual standpoint, the Cooper S has two colors that I like that you can't get with the Cooper, and I love the exhaust and the blacked out grill. My wife isn't helping much because every time I talk myself into just getting a Cooper she finds a new way to make me consider the "S" again.
Looks like there's a fairly active Mini community in the area, so I'm looking forward to taking part.

Welcome to the forum, Derek!!! I just picked up my Clubman from Mini of Charleston on May 23rd. They've been nothing short of awesome throughout the process!!! This forum was immensely helpful when I was debating my options (I was just lurking then), and even more so when it came to tracking my order and knowing what was going on from other folks who were in the same build week as I was.
I went back and forth about whether or not to go for the S...I went for the S. Largely for visual reasons on my part...for horsepower reasons on my husband's part
. The Laser Blue color helped tip the scales...it's BEAUTIFUL if you haven't seen it in person! The pictures in the configurator just don't do it justice. And I really enjoy the horsepower, too
. (Husband made the mistake of buying me "The Italian Job" DVD as a congratulations present...I think it's influencing me
.)
Hopefully we'll see you at MTTS on the 16th...but regardless, best of luck in your buying process and travel safe when you come down this way!

Perhaps some current S owners can clarify, but I'm pretty sure the gas mileage on the S versus the non-S is negligible.
Per the MINIUSA website:
MINI Cooper - 37 Hwy / 28 City / 32 Combined
MINI Cooper S - 34 Hwy / 26 City / 29 Combined
Go for the S. You know you wanna.

Thanks for the input everyone. The Cooper S and the Cooper seem to be pretty close for me...
Laser Blue is actually at the top of the list if I get the "S", with Dark Silver Metallic being a close second. Black top, mirrors and stripes with both of those.
Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it on the 16th. My wife's mother fell afoul of the local Constabulary and she has to be in court on the 16th in the afternoon and asked my wife to go with her for support. I'm working on a major project right now, so getting time off during the week is pretty tough, and my wife needs to be with me to help make the decisions.
With all the tourist traffic, Court in the summer can take hours.
Mini of Charleston seems to be a very good place, I've had all my questions answered very promptly, but no pressure on me to commit to anything.
