Under 5000 Miles Club

If you're like me...and I know I am...you are doing and discovering firsts everyday in your new MINI. Share your joys here! It will be fun and we'll all learn something.

For example, I was driving around for almost a week until I noticed that there is a small "cargo" net on the left side of the front passenger's floor! I'm not sure what to keep there.

My MINI has yet to spend a night outside!

My gas mileage gets better on each tank!

The toggles switches are great because there is not a wrong direction to operate them!

OK, You're up!

I just broke 300 miles and filled up for the first time! I wish the sport button could be programed to stay on. Having to turn it on every time before I get ready to drive off is a pain though I'm getting use to it.

I am still on my first tank of gas! I have found that I like driving with the sport button on all the time as well. It is more like my "old" MINI that way.

Yep, just gotta be a bit more cautious driving as having it on makes it much easier to get above that 4500 RPM break-in limit.

I also prefer driving with it on, especially now that I'm done with break-in (just under 3000 miles on my MINI now ). It absolutely transforms MINI's with the auto trans.

Christmas card? Did anyone include a picture or reference of your new friend?

I did!

When I first unlock it for the day, it makes this whirling sound toward the back, does yours?

Mine makes something like that. Also my car has the convenience package. With the car locked, if I do not have the fob on me and try to open the boot, you can hear what sounds like a hard drive crunching away as it tries to locate the fob. The sound comes from the rear passenger side. It continues until I stop touching the touch pad.

I've got about 1400 miles on mine now. It doesn't run to the store or anything like that. It's for those fun twisty roads. Now that it's broken in my mileage dropped a little, which I'm sure is due to my right foot.

I love this car!

Same, mine actually does that whenever I let it sit for about 3 hours or more. I read somewhere on here that's it's the fuel pump priming or some cool gadgetry of the sort.

If I open the car after sitting a while I get an electric kind of sound briefly. I always mean to ask what that is. I could never pinpoint where it is coming from. It sounds more like from the front of the car. What I'll do is sit in the car for about 3 or so hours then have my wife open the door. Maybe then I can pinpoint the location

I have not reset my average MPH yet, so at 1822 miles I've averaged 38.3 mph.

By the way, Merry Christmas! I think that we've all already got our gift!

hi there-

I've had my Mini for only two days (Merry Christmas indeed!) so I still have my nose deep in the owner's manual. But I might have an idea about a "whirring" sound that I noticed when getting in and out of the car- apparently when you open a door the window goes down slightly and then raises again when you close it... does it sound like it's coming from there?

Congrats on the new purchase!!!

My sound at least is different. Although I have noticed the window as well, it's a different sound. Also this happens upon just unlocking the car, not opening the door.

JW,

I believe the sounds that you are hearing are the window motors lowering the window a half inch or so upon opening. When the doors are closed, the window jumps back up to full height. Not sure as to why this happens other than to make sure the window is sealed and that you don't damage the window upon closing but watch the upper edge of the windwo closely as you open the door and you'll see it happen. Then close the door while still outside and you'll see it pop back to full closed position.

Have any of you with sun roofs held the "unlock" button for several seconds after initially unlocking the car? Try it and see what happens. I think the sequence is two clicks on the unlock, then hold the unlock for several seconds. I got a thrill the first time!

Mine makes that noise without opening any doors. The windows don't drop down until you squeeze the door handle.

The sound I'm hearing is not the window sound, it's something "coming alert" sounds more like and electrical whir. I seem to notice it toward the rear.

I love the holding the unlock button as well, but it has been too cold to actually have a reason to do it.

Is anyone showing your secret compartment or are you trying to keep them secret?

I don't use mine. The piano black leaves finger prints. Maybe I need some driving gloves...

Actually that's a different sound. I hear that all the time. The other sound is heard only after not being in the car for a while and then opening a door or the boot.

Same here and I'm OCD. Also the only things I leave in it rarely need to be touched. My insurance card, registration and spare driver license (never risk being pull edover without one ). Things I access often: iPod charger, aux cable, GPS cord, student ID etc, along with the owners manual, I leave in the glove compartment.

When I first got my MINI I showed the secret compartment off to almost everyone, but the fingerprints made the novelty wear off pretty quick. Plus it's pretty cool keeping it secret.

Oh and like others, the sound I realize is definitely not the windows. I hardly notice that sound (is much more subtle). Also this sound happens only when my MINI has been sitting for a couple hours and is heard upon unlocking the door, not opening it.

My Odometer is stuck at 2023!

But that's only because there is a foot on snow on the ground and he's safely tucked away in the garage for, apparently, some quality time with the cat! Darn those footprints!

Another sign that my MINI is getting older... the license plates came and are now installed.

I'll send a pick when I'm done, but my BRG Chevy Suburban will soon be sporting bonnet stripes and a MINI front license frame. I hope at least a few people get it when the see it!

I broke the 1000 mile mark this weekend on a trip to see the Spruce Goose! It's too bad they didn't use that to transport our MINIs state-side!--I think they could easily fit a couple hundred in there!

@Super: I like your idea of bonnet stripes on the Suburban...may I also suggest some white flames on the side (just like Hammer & the Coop)?

Any Modifications Yet?

I know that we all have new MINIs, but has anyone modified it yet?

Here's my list:

1. I am in the process of retro-fitting Rear Fog Lights;
2. Installed the Go Mini Go Glove Box Tidy;
3. Installed a new oddments tray to hold my compressor and slime can;
4. Installed the Warning Triangle;
5. Venture Shield; and
6. Installed the Center Console Tray

Things I'm considering (longterm):

1. JCW Tuning Kit;
2. JCW big brake kit (when it's released);
3. JCW Suspension Kit; and
4. Whatever else I start to obsess over!

First of all Wolf... WOW!

Thanks for the links, I would not have known what an Oddments tray was, but I still would have wanted one!

My adds:

I added a GPS and even did a nifty install using my removable ash tray, I'll post pics some day.

I'm still working on a clean XM radio install, but it might take awhile. Have to decide where considering power supply, antenna, and audio output.

Window Tint - Ceramic

Paint sealer - Cilajet

Here's what I got for Christmas (My wife says that I'm lucky that I got anything because the MINI was my gift):

CD Visor holder (I really didn't plan on using too many CD's, but now I can store them I guess)

A MINI hat (I like it)

A MINI key chain (It differentiates my fob from my wife's)

A California Car Duster (I love it, but what do they have in Oregon?)

Someday I will consider upgrading my standard tires and rims.

(I Love this car!)
