New - Kinda

Well ,I have owned a 1959 Mini -Back in 1973 to 1978- Which means it was a 850 CC - but we changed that engine out for a Austin 1098 engine - wow about 60 HP - but the whole car only weighed 1225 Lbs. - 4 speed / 3 syncros - Used to Autocross it a lot - then my children started to be born and out went the Mini - Cried the day we sold it - well the Kids are well grown now, oldest one in her 30's - I'm 54 - I own a Harley Touring Bike- the wild child has emerged - The wife wanted a Nissan 350Z - but got her to drive a 2005 Cooper S -she loved it - waiting for a Insurance settlement from a bike accident to get it - hope to be settled in 4 weeks - been 2 years this November , so it won't be long - the dealer handles New sales BMW/Mercedes/Audi - all German - but doesn't like the restrictions a Mini dealership would impose. the Mini only has 15K on it , has every option you could get in 05 - except it has no JCW equipment on it. Looks good - hope it's still there when I get my settlement. But one way or the other a Mini is in our future. Maybe even new. (Still like superchargers over a Turbo though)

Welcome. Turbos aren't that bad. Better not drive one, you may be surprised. That said, they're all fun. Got mine 3 wks ago and haven't ridden my bike since. I'm almost embarrasssed. Good luck on your settlement and bad luck that you have it.

Thanks everyone -

I guess what I remember about Turbos is years ago if you did any spirited driving they needed a cool down period before shutting down or the oil would "coke" around the bearings. No movement in the oil after shutdown ment no more cooling and as turbos are a heat driven device they literaly cook the oil in the bearing area. Superchargers are not a heat driven but rather a pulley driven device hence not near the heat issues. It was a reliability issue.

Has any of this changed on the turbo? Has the change in lubrication oils in the past 10 years been enough to overcome the heat and not worry about it anymore ?
