R NUMBERS (dumb question)

Excuse my newness, but what do the R#'s mean -- R53, R56? Can someone please explain. Also, I have a MCS 06 manual - what R# am I?

If you have a 2006 MCS (Cooper S), you have an R53. The R56 denotes the new 2007 coupes.
