Side Impact Recall - I declined it

What exactly is this Side Impact recall? My '15 MCS was at the dealer last week an oil service and rev-matching update and they said they could do the recall too.

I asked them to hold off on the recall for the time being. My vague understanding is that it would involve removing some inner body panelling and maybe some upholstery, then installing new parts, and then reassembling the interior. Also, my understanding is that the recall affects rear seat passengers only.

I never have rear seat occupants and I really do not want to risk adding some new interior rattling noise.

So how drastic is this recall? Should I get it done? Anyone here with experience good or bad? Thanks.

It's a moronic recall. I wouldn't bother with it either.

I'd read my insurance policy carefully before knowingly skipping recall.

Some day you will sell the car. The new owner probably assumes you had the recall done. Be sure to advertise the car as not having the rear seat safety recall applied.

Side Impact Recall - I declined it
My dealer said they couldn't do any other recall work without having it done due to continuity issues with the warranty department. They want everything to be up to date. I'm sure I could still deny it but it's not that big of a deal plus it makes it easier on the dealer, who I have a good relationship with.

Pretty much they just add "impact resistant foam" to make the safety rating a 5/5 as opposed to a 4.5/5. Not real numbers but just a general idea of what's going on.

They remove the side panel and the C-pillar trim and glue a pad in. It's a pretty straightforward procedure and shouldn't result in any new rattles. The trim pieces pry off and snap back in.

I definitely want it done, my 6 year old daughter rides in the backseat. My car was in for service a few weeks ago and they didn't have the kit yet for this recall. It'll probably be nearly a year before I need service again. I assume I can bring it in anytime to get this recall performed before then, right?

We're doing it. To skip would be moronic

It replaces a hard contact point on the rear trim with impact-absorbing foam instead. Supposed to also eliminate a squeak source, as well.

I'd recommend going forward with it.

yes, no other service needs to be performed at the same time. Just give your service department a call to set up an appointment.

I thought the issue only affected 2014 Justas, but yours is a 2015 MCS, isn’t it...

Why did they offer you to do the recall?

My '15 MCS was built in very early July 2014, so possibly the side impact issue had not arisen yet. What I do know is that my dealer read my key and promptly wrote up the recall work. Until I'm confident that the recall does not itself cause more problems than it solves I'll hold off.

I see.

I’m actually more curious that the dealer mentioned the recall to you due to the model of your car than for its build date. My ’15 Cooper S was also built on July 2014, but I thought this recall only affected Copper models and not Cooper S’s, as stated on the TSB below...

Recall Campaign: Side Impact Performance

Has the recall now been extended to MCS models as well?

Well, mine's definitely the S version. The service advisor who wrote my car up for the recall work was looking at his computer screen with my key in his key reader - so I guess it's "official", not a mis-recollection on his part.

I believe the recall was recently expanded to affect other cars and model years.

Thanks for the info guys.

I wasn't aware of the expansion in the model range of this recall.

Last week my dealer did the recall and now I have no audio in the left and right rear speakers, no audio in my front passenger door and center speaker! Car is going in tomorrow for audio fix, I hope my tires still spin after they fix the audio!!

Got it done today and everything is exactly the same as when I dropped the car off. No new rattles/noises/issues.

Yeah...I wasn't particularly happy with MINI after being assured that my 2014 F56 wasn't part of the included recall and now I've been riding for months with my kid in the backseat.
