2005 MCS engine hesitation, surging

Hey all. I'm writing about three separate but possibly related anomalies.

1) Engine occasionally hesitates when trying to accelerate out of a fairly hard corner, usually in 2nd gear I think. It doesn't die or miss (like a bad plug), it just doesn't respond to throttle. I've only noticed it two or maybe three times, always during spirited cornering. Power comes back after less than a second.

2) Engine has somewhat "surgey" power delivery all the time when accelerating. I'm not referring to the drive-by-wire throttle delay, but rather when getting into the throttle a little in the 3000-4500 rpm range, where the supercharger is getting on the boost pretty good, the acceleration is not smooth, but rather surges slightly, like I was moving the gas pedal up and down 1/2" or so, not in any kind of regular pattern.

3) Have random intermittent SES light with a P0171 code, indicating a lean condition. This light comes and goes very sporadically, and I haven't noticed any correlation to the other issues, but maybe...

The car has a 15% pulley and K&N drop in filter, otherwise stock. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would suspect a fueling issue. Possibly a fuel pump or maybe filter. There is a schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail that you can hook a pressure tester to, they are a common rental tool at part stores.

That should get you started, after that my second guess would be something electronic related to AFR.

Best of luck!

I haven't had a chance to check this out, thanks for the suggestion. I need to try it. Despite the supposed lean condition, I think the gas mileage has suffered since adding the 15% SC pulley, and we don't drive around with our foot in it all the time. That is a little disappointing as well.

Any other ideas?

My thoughts would be the Bypass Valve (spring) is in need of replacement.

1) Just to check - the DSC wasn't kicking in right? During hard cornering under power, the DSC cuts power. Do you have the LSD?

LSD = limited slip, right? I'm not sure, but I don't think it has one. It does have the DSC, and that's a good idea for problem #1. It's doing it's job of keeping the car stable. That's why you can turn it off if you want, so it doesn't cut power. Thanks!

I had pretty much the same exact issue on mine. Same code and all. I ended up disconnecting the TMAP sensor and starting the car to see if the problem would occur right off the bat. It did, and I replaced the sensor. Been going strong ever since. Hopefully this helps.
