How do I release a new timing chain tensioner?

I am replacing the timing chain tensioner on my 2006 MCS (getting the "idling diesel" sound). I got the old one out, but the new one came what appears to be compressed. Is there some trick to releasing it? I can't imagine I am supposed to install it like this.

Here's a picture. Old one on the left, new one on the right:

Its pretensioned, just install it as it releases once filled with oil. Its released by oil pressure.

I'm getting that diesel sound as well. Is it tough to get the tensioner out?

Not hard to do, use a swivel 19mm socket with a small extension & ratchet. It's on the back of the block just above the oil filter housing, when you install the new one the torque is 46 ft lbs. We usually will take the extra time to remove the valve cover and manually pop the tension open with a prybar, to remove any chance of jumping time, or having the chain ball up and break (seen it happen before).

If you don't have the time or want to take the time to do that, I would recommend bumping the starter a couple times without starting the car, as the torque of the engine cranking is usually enough to pop it open.

Here's a couple links to either the tensioner or a full kit:

Don't remove the oil cooler unless you plan on replacing the seals and making a mess.

The tensioner is removable with the cooler in place, just use a 19mm swivel, extension, and ratchet from the top.

So I replaced the timing tensioner. Of course, to my luck the sound is still there and was pretty loud the other morning(coldish morning). What else would you guys recommend me look at?

You may have broken timing rails, I would recommend a full timing kit. Minus the tensioner of course which you just bought.
