Carbon Door Handle REMOVAL

Hey,

So a few years ago I bought a set of (can't remember the name anymore) carbon door handle covers for my R53 .. looked great and seemed high quality for a few years, but after a while the carbon resin have yellowed and developed some cracks from being outside for some time.

Has anyone ever tried to REMOVE them? They came pre attached with some 3M two sided tape so I think i have a battle ahead of me.

Any thoughts?

I would suggest heat to loosen up the glue on the tape, such as a heat gun (try to blow heat away from your paint though, it may cause it to bubble) or blow dryer. You could also try 3M adhesive remover if you can spray it under the covers with a small spray straw.
Are you trying to save them or just get them off? If you just want them off, grab the lip and pull. They will probably break apart so be careful not to cut yourself.

Thanks! I will try the adhesive remover and see if that works.

I'm not trying to save them, just get them off and replace.

If it gives you a heck of a time, maybe just remove the exterior door handle all together and try using heat like suggested above. This way it's away from the door itself. Or removing it will just give you the leverage to break it off or remove it in one piece, depending how stuck on they are. Here is a thread on NAM that can help with the door handle removal if you decide to go this route. Good luck!

Pour/drip some GooGone adhesive remover on the seams. It will soften the adhesive.

Unless they are really bad, youre probably better off trying to wet sand them than to fight the double-sided tape.

Pelican,

If I recall, when I first hatched the idea of wrapping my handles in black, the removal process was quite complicated .. a first attempt netted nothing but a headache and subsequent decision to just buy the covers.
Thanks again for the tip.

Easier said than done, right? haha. I hate when that happens. Well do let us know how you end up getting them off. Hope it's an easy process for you.
