I've decided to reverse the gears to use the undamaged sides of the teeth. The problem is the shoulder on the back side of the driven gear. The solution is the 10mm flat washer which I drilled and filed to fit over the shaft, then filed flat so it's the same thickness as the shoulder (.256" from the other side of the gear to the face of the shoulder I think).
