Should I get the 17" or 16" R90 wheelset?

What's the difference? They look the same to me. I just heard that the 17" is a 2 piece. Why is that so important or better? Anyone have pictures of the 16" R90s?

Jivanivan,

The wheels are nearly identical, but the distinguishing feature of the 17" is the screwheads. I personally prefer the look of the 17", but they will be harder to clean and heavier.

Here is the 16":

Here is the 17" (in Quicktime movie form):

Hope that helps,

jivanivan-
At the top of the topic section on Tires, Wheels, and Brakes there are very useful general info posts-That is a good place to start.
Such as:

The R90 is a cross spoke design made for MINI by BBS. The design is very similar but varies in outer diameter size and the bolts on the two piece design-for relative lightness and strength. Cost is an issue- see below.

The 16" version is a one piece cast alloy wheel OEM upgrade that costs $190 for each rim compared to $385 for each R90 17" rim. The whole R90 17' Wheelset-tire and rims retails for $2565!
Offset is 48mm and weight is 20.9 pounds
Standard tire is Dunlop SP sports 3000A/5000A weighing about 23.5 pounds each

The 17" version is the top of the line OEM upgrade (not including the 18" John cooper works wheel)
It is two piece and is a stronger design than a cast alloy wheel.
Offset is 48mm and weight is 24.1 pounds
Standard tire is Pirelli Euforia 205/45-17 which weighs about 22 pounds each

Personally I think the R90 17" is the best looking MINI wheel- check out the 3 minis in the movie Italian job- they all have this wheel.

If absolute performance is your goal, there are much lighter wheels than the 17" BBS R90's. However, I also think that they are absoulutely gorgeous and I love mine.

I plan on getting a set of lightweight 16's for track/extreme performance use, but the R-90's are my favorite look by far.

And another great excuse to post a pic from the Tail of the Dragon!
