Powdercoating help?
Powdercoating help?
So I bit the bullet and bought myself some Panasport wheels. My plan was to have them powdercoated in a semi-gloss black of some kind and leave the polished (actually machined) lip as is.
I talked with one powdercoater today, and was told they can't do that because the aluminum tape they use to mask off areas will burn into the wheel's aluminum and damage or discolor it. They can only powdercoat the entire wheel.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm fairly sure I've seen powdercoated wheels with polished lips, so there must be some way to do it, yes?
Thanks in advance.

I was told the same thing and I seriously called about 10 places all over the state of GA. They said it is *possible* but they would greatly prefer not to do it and really didn't even want to give it a try.
Mine was opposite though, I only wanted the lip done.

I had my Hamman wheels powedercoated and then the lip polished butto be honest i forget which was done first. You could always get the entire wheel coated and then just have the lip re polished .

Things aren't looking good for my powdercoating plan. I met with a powdercoater this morning, and he said the problem is that the lip of the Panasport is clear-coated.
Even though it will be masked when they spray on the powder, the clearcoat won't survive being baked at 400 degrees for half an hour. So I would have lovely, powdercoated spokes, but the lip would have to be refinished.
My options are to:
1. have the whole wheel powdercoated, which is too racy of a look for my classic PW/B;
2. have the whole wheel powdercoated, and then have the lip refinished, like Randy has done;
3. go with a regular, wet paint instead of powdercoating (probably expensive, but I'm getting an estimate);
4. return the Panasports, and start looking for something else.
#4 is in the lead right now.
