understanding offsets........

Hi gang,
Quick offset question....making sure I am understanding it right.....If you're comparing 2 wheels, say both identical, but one is offset 37 and one is offset 44. The 2nd wheel is 7 mm further away from the centerline of the wheel---towards the STREET side. So that would move the whole wheel IN towards the wheel well????

Is that correct??????

Thanks!!

You know what, I had the same problem figuring out the offset before. Try to use this offset calculator..... hope this can answer your question. gd luck!

The lower the offset, the further it will be pushed out. High offsets will push the wheel inward toward the brakes.

example: the stock S Lites are a +48 offset while an aftermarket wheel is +40. The aftermarket wheel will be 8mm further out than the S Lites.

A spacer of 8mm would make the S Lite like a +40 offset wheel.

The higher the NUMERIC offset, the closer the tire's center will be to the car's centerline. My 38mm offset BBS wheels stick out about a 1/4" +/- farther than my 45mm offset Team Dynamics.

keeping the same wheel size/dimensions (17x7 / 205-40-17) and stock suspension, what's the minimum offset that you can put on a wheel before it starts hanging past the wheel well (and possibly rubbing?)

13mm = 1". So, based upon my 38mm BBS wheels...31-32mm gets you pretty close. I wouldn't suggest it for a number of reasons...but reason is sometimes missing from some of the things we do...
