I am really starting to not like my S-Lites. While they look good and bring back memories of when I first got my car... they are a PITA not only to keep clean but to keep non-curbed because of the way they are designed. Don't ask me how I curb them it just happens, sometimes it's my fault, other times it's dipsticks in big SUVs forcing me up on the curb... My question is if I wanted to get new winter wheels next year what would be better for snow: 18" or 17"? Of course I would put Blizzak RFs on them because they are snow tires and seem to have fairly SWEET traction in my friend's S4. I like the way 18s look but if 17s are better in the snow than I would be more than happy to go with those.

Your friends S4 is all wheel drive, so traction is probably pretty good.

Tire width is what your looking for in the winter. Stay away from wide wheels if you can.

The best choice has been listed above, but you can look for some used 15" 7 holies with the all season contis on them(they'll fit on the "S"). Tires are much cheaper for the smaller diameter wheels too, so blizzaks will be cheap.

1 more for the 15s with 65 series tire.

But to answer your question, I would go 17 and get as thin a tire you could get. Ask Alex about it.

I use my S-Lites with Bridgestone Blizzaks WS-50 (215/45/17). Never a problem.
