Based on my personal experience, my conclusion is that there is
at least one A/S tire (Pilot Sport A/S) that can perform about
as well as the high performance summer tires (S03, GS-D3 class).

that is all i posted on my original post. I did not personally attack
anyone...in fact, if one was to read the thread from the beginning,
i was the one that was originally personally "teased." but i just
joked back as i usually do about the 'ignorance.'

there is no way in hell the SP9000 (especially the DSST) will
out perform the Pilot Sport A/S. there is just no way. and
the fixation of using RF's is not healthy...at least not yet.

over and out.

not all A/S are 'bad.'

The lack of praise for the Dunlops combined with the praise for A/S tire (WTFO?) has me baffled. A/S = jack of all tades, master of none.

Since you obviously won't believe me, here's a quote from Michelin's Director Technical Marketing NA about RFs (Dec, 2005), "Stiffness of the [RF] sidewall improves the lateral ability and cornering power ... You have to have a good tread design and compound to stick to the road, but inherently, a self-supporting tire has better lateral cornering power."

When are people going to learn that RFs rule? Just get away from the 1st generation, as they are not the industry standard today.

It's like talking to a wall. But I hear ya...price is what drives you to non-RFs. There's no other reason...

I agree, I have the Pilot Sport A/S 2 (I believe they updated) on my Jetta and the tires can easily outhandle the car! They are pretty good in snow too! I was parked and it snowed a lot (18 inches! ) I went out swept off my car turned it on, waited for it to warm up and pulled right out, no problems at all.

I've used the non-DSST SP9000 on a lightweight car, and actually think it compared pretty well with the S03s--a little less sharp turn-in and a better ride from the soft sidewalls, though they chunked a bit under prolonged stress. I do think they would be much too soft for a heavy car like the MINI.

It's not too surprising those new AS tires are getting so much better in the dry, once you consider how much worse they do in snow than regular narrow AS tires. But they're not useless because they are far better than summer tires at subzero temperatures when there is no snow--which is how most winter driving is for lots of people. And besides, they provide a nicely safe and predictable introduction to high-speed cornering for new Motorers. Wear 'em out and have fun doing it. But just please buy snow tires if you'll be driving in the snow.

Can we pick the crack pipe back up yet?
