All4 Tire Depth Question
All4 Tire Depth Question
Long story short. We were on a two-lane highway and happened to be passing an oncoming pickup truck pulling a trailer when his transfer case exploded. Fortunately we were in a Countryman, and I managed to dodge almost everything that came at us. (It could have been much worse.) The main spindle took a bad bounce and went right into the side of the car. There’s a little damage on the lower plastic panel. The back driver’s side wheel took on the brunt of the damage, and the tire was gashed open. I’m thankful for the runflats. The tires had 20,000 miles on them.
His insurance wants to replace one tire. (This is a blast to deal with during a pandemic. We live 2.5 hours away from the nearest place that can fix this. We live in the middle of nowhere.)
We had a nail go into the tire a few years ago and had to replace all the tires. Once again, the car had around 20k on the tires. Thankfully, I kept the other three, and we put one of those tires on to get us by. It is three years older and the tire depth is a little off. It’s not by much, but I’m curious if anyone knows how close they need to be to prevent damage. (Our Countryman is a 2016 MCS with All4.)
My options seem to be:
1. Keep the used tire on
2. Let the insurance pay for one tire and us pay for three 🤦🏻♂️
3. Try to find a way to get the insurance company to pay for all four tires

Who is paying for the other damage you mentioned?
Will your insurance company pay?
I'd just replace all 4. It sucks but tires aren't that much esp if you don't put runflats back on but that just me. Bummer of a situation but like you said it could've been worse.
