Falken Azenis RT660 anyone?
Falken Azenis RT660 anyone?
I'm thinking about getting some 225/45/15 Azenis RT660's for tighter courses and wondering if anyone has tried them yet? My current 225/45/16 Yoko A052's are great for fast courses but not optimum for the tight ones. I would still want to run 225's front and 205's in the rear. I'm planning to buy some 15x9 +35 wheels for the front, probably Konig's but use my old 15x7.5 SSR's on the rear. Also, the Yoko's are wearing extremely fast and I'm hoping the Azenis do better, in that department?
The 225/45's on a 9" wheel is what the hotshots on the Miata forum and other tests I've read, recommend and say the 245/40 is no better on a 9 than the 225/45.
TR only has 3 reviews, so far, on the 660's but they did extremely well, on a dry course, when they tested them, just a tick behind the Yoko's.

I have a GP2 that I use for HPDEs as of a couple of years ago. Stock suspension. Stock wheel sizes (215/40/17). I ran AD08Rs the first year (lasted a year of ~6 weekend events) with appropriate front to rear swaps and dismount and side to side swap halfway through the year - some micro chunking, but tolerable. The tried A052s great grip, but I destroyed outside tread (delaminated and threw off about 1/2 of circumference) of highly loaded front tire. I believe more front neg camber needed for them. Trying 660s - will have first track event this weekend. Would be curious to know your experience to day on them and pressures relative to A052s. Will let you know how I fare.
I have these (205-40/17) on my 2003 MCS and just completed a track weekend. The tires did great. They didn't overheat or lose any grip all weekend. I had 7 15 min sessions and there isn't much wear at all. I'm on stock suspension and was concerned I'd chew up the drivers side front since the track was run clockwise.
I have now run three track weekends (Sat/Sun) with my GP2 on my RT-660s. Chin MSR Houston (my home track) in December, Chin COTA in January, TDE MSRH in March. Still same stock set-up as in my comments in Dec 2020. Regular tire swaps front to back, dismounted and changed inside / outside after COTA. Ran personal best at MSRH in December, consistent fast laps one after another for pretty much all sessions. Perhaps some falloff at end of COTA weekend, after outer tread shoulder round off. Not quite as quick at MSRH in March, seem to have lost some grip, but I was not on my game that weekend either, so not sure how much was me or the tires. Tires still look OK, quite a bit of tread left (have not measured yet). For the money, I think these are a hot ticket. I have another new set ready for mounting. I have bought another set of wheels (NM RSe05s). For next COTA outing I will put the new RT-660s on the original wheels and likely go with Nankang AR-1s on the new wheels. Try to get back to back comparison. Will update afterwards.
Everyone in my local club runs the BFG rivals, I've been thinking about running the 660s on my 11' Clubman. Just been shopping for wheels and tires sizes. I'm currently on 215/45/17 Firehawks on 17x8s. I'm already in ST due to poly bushings and I'll stay there since it allows me to add camber plates.
Would I need a 9" wheel to get the most out of 235/40/17s? Assuming they fit?
